How do I fix this? On the first date. I'm such an ass

Posted 05 October 2010 - 04:28 PM

OK, so I'm going to admit that I am a complete douche. I took a girl out on a date today and had my phone on vibrate. I honestly didn't think I would get any calls and during dinner I didn't, so I didn't think much of it since we went to see that movie; 'The Social Network' which was complete shi^ in my opinion.

Anyways long story short. I had consultants who were going to call me, for they needed my programming expertise in Standford CT, Charlotte NC, Raleigh NC, and DC/Virginia (it was a 703 so I'm guessing).

I took all 4 calls, since all calls were important to me and my consulting work. I missed 20 minutes of the film throughout the entire movie.

How do I fix this?

I did text her afterwards; "Hope I can see you again soon. I'll ping you once things settle down."

But, I know it being the first date sorta; that I failed miserably. However, to me consulting work is more important right now.

Call her up and explain what happened. If it doesn't work out, then fuck it.

Fix your work/life balance, and attitude to both. Not only would I not want to date someone who took work calls on a date, I wouldn't want to go for a drink with a mate who did the same.

Next time you go on a date, turn the phone off or leave it at home.

If you want to make it up to that girl then forget about explaining. It'll come across as making excuses. Just apologise for being a jackass and promise to make it up to her. Don't grovel either. ;)

apologize for taking the phone calls and make an offer to make it up to her on a second date in which you're pretty sure you won't be receiving phones calls.

maybe send some naked pics.

Is she worth it?

Don't be a douche, and have confidence. It's so hard to do both at the same time, I know.

Maybe if you sent her some roses, or impressed her? People aren't idiots and they do look to be with successful partners. Damn I wish I had a Lambordini.

If all else fails, find a suitable replacement. Perhaps even a newer model.

you're one of THOSE guys.

Turn your phone off in the movie... not just for your date, but for everyone. That's why they STILL have to remind everyone at the starting of the movie. (yeah I know you said it was on vibrate... it's not the ringing, it's the douche answering the phone and either shuffling out of the theatre in front of me, or just sitting there yammering on it that's annoying).

Further more, I believe in honesty. If your job requires you on call at all time, then that's the way it is. And if you don't mind it, or possibly enjoy it, then so be it. It appears you do like being on call, why else would you leave it on during an entire date. You made the choice to put it on vibrate which means you actually stopped to think about it... your choice went for "I'm on call tonight".

This isn't bad, I love my work as well! And I've been with several women, some of whom didn't like that work always sat on the top of my list of things to do, others didn't mind it at all.

For all you know this girl sees your dedication to work as meaning you're stable and hard working. Those are GOOD qualities. And if you had covered up such qualities up front, well they wouldn't have actually known who you are!

It reminds me of this one girl I dated who had a kid. She complained I worked to much (a whopping 45 hours, oh my, how horrendous... :P ) , and that I needed to spend more time at home. This from a girl who had no job and a KID to support. Yeah that one didn't last very long after that. (not saying that this girl/guy you went on a date with is the same, I'm just saying that the talk about work vs date reminded me of it).

Don't make your apology's to the girl, make them to your clients and turn off your phone.

Not to mention it's annoying when people are texting during a movie cause the screen is bright and they are constantly turning the screen on and off.

I would tell her you're a CIA agent and you're on a mission and need important phone calls. JK, but just don't do that again. If you're expecting calls, tell her in advance so she's prepared.

First off, TURN OF YOUR FUCKING CELLPHONE DURING THE MOVIE! I want to strike you with LIGHTNING when I see a bright phone screen while watching a film.

Second, call her and apologize but don't grovel. Don't be a bitch either, keep it smooth; if it doesn't work, well who gives a shit it's just a first date.

I don't take my phone with me when I leave the house. Customers & clients can leave a message, that's why I pay for these things. It's such a weight off my shoulders & I gladly clean up the mess the next day. If the job is that important that I can't be away from the phone for the night, I stay at home.

Well, if you knew prior to the date that you would be on call, then you probably could have informed her that about the situation and either postponed the date or make sure she understood that at any point you may have to pause the date for the expected call. It seems to me from your post that YOU knew this was going to happen so at the very least, you should have explained your situation.

Now as for after the fact, call her and let her know you feel like an ass for how the night turned out and would like to see her again. Just make sure this time that it is on a day that you can give her your undivided attention.
