A question about working in software development.

Posted 12 October 2010 - 01:03 PM

Not sure if this is the right place to be placing this question, but I have to ask a programmer what business is like these days.

I am currently a student majoring in computer science and it is a requirement for this class for me to ask a programmer about how the job industry is treating their field.

I'll list the questions that I have to ask below and any response to it would be greatly appreciated.

1. What language(s) do you program in?

2. What system do you use to program?

3. Do you freelance or work for a company? If you work for a company, what company is it, and is it full time or contract.

4. Do you modify old programs or do you write entirely new ones?

5. What can be the expected base pay for a programmer just starting out.

6. Is it difficult to find jobs for programming.

Any responses would be appreciated, and if i am in the wrong place to ask this question please let me know and direct me to the correct forum.

Why would you need to know the company for which one works?

Not sure, just a question that she posed, i guess to know that it is coming for a legitimate source, but I don't think it really matters.

2. Windows and Linux PC's

3. Work for a company Full Time, leading aerospace defense contractor.

4. Both

5. entry level programming jobs are around 40K in my company (salary range is proprietary)

6. It is difficult to find programmers that have experience that can be applied, and that qualify for a security clearance.

1. What language(s) do you program in?
C# and ASP.net

2. What system do you use to program?
Windows

3. Do you freelance or work for a company? If you work for a company, what company is it, and is it full time or contract.
A company local to me, full time.

4. Do you modify old programs or do you write entirely new ones?
A mixture of both, a lot of time is spent modifying the company's flagship application, but some time is also spent writing new programs.

5. What can be the expected base pay for a programmer just starting out.
I started only on £14k but as a junior, and that is due to be reviewed in a month and a half time (I went straight from college to the job, so I think this is great for me starting out because I have no degree).

6. Is it difficult to find jobs for programming.
In my area at least, they are all over the place. There are so many opportunities for Java and .net developers in my region it's really surprising.

2. What system do you use to program?

Windows, Red Hat Linux, Solaris

3. Do you freelance or work for a company? If you work for a company, what company is it, and is it full time or contract.

Company, but I'm not really encouraged to advertise who I work for. Full time.

4. Do you modify old programs or do you write entirely new ones?

A lot of both - some programs are 30-40 years old, and sometimes I get new jobs.

5. What can be the expected base pay for a programmer just starting out.

45 to 60 thousand dollars per year, provided the programmer has a bachelor's degree in a related field.

6. Is it difficult to find jobs for programming.

No, but it can be difficult finding the right job for programming.

I only answered this because my answers seemed to offer a little variety.
