DVD Rom not opening

Posted 26 October 2010 - 12:02 AM

Hi guys!

Okay first off, I'm not a 'hardware' kinda guy, I'm more a 'software' kinda guy. So this might be a dumb question..
My DVD ROM is not oppening!! I press the little button and you can hear that i wants to open but it doesn't even budge. And it's weird cuz it just randomly happend. I didn't touch it! So that's very frustrating..
I realize I should probably then have to open the PC. So, what should I then look out for? What should I do?

Thanks! :stupid:

Find a paper clip, bend it so that the straight part protrudes out. Jab it into the 'emergency eject' slot. Should be a tiny hole next to the head phone jack.

If it pops out, give it a gentle tap & see it will close. If it does not then something inside is broken, either gears or a belt. You may just need to break down & replace it.

as no2pencil said.

It is most probably dirt/goo in the drive mechanics that cause it to jam (the motor that opens the tray is not strong enough). Else, get a new one..

I know this topic has been here for a while now. But cutting to the chase, where is this 'emergency eject slot' ? is it that tiiiiiny hole in from of the drive? Cuz I tried pokin stuff in it and it didn't do anything, so I don't think I've got the right hole...
..And sometimes that can be fatal if you know what I mean..

You may have to press it in pretty far. You'll be able to feel when you push it the gears will start to push the drive slot out. Don't be afraid. It likes it that way...

If it won't open, then that may just be part of the problem. A gear could be shot...

Yep could be a gear shot or the band on the motor has come off. Might want to take it and pop it open to see whats going on.

The gears never go shoot in those things, they do break if you get mad and punch the DVD drive....

If you don't want to fix it or replace it, you could tap a pull string to the tray. But really you might need to replace the drive belt. Drive belts dry out, stretch and sometimes break.
