Inconstent file system
Posted 30 October 2010 - 01:15 PM
Hi. I have been through a lot and I really need help. It all started when I was trying to install Windows XP on a second partition of my drive. It worked for a while but eventually It broke and I erased the partition. I had used EasyBSD to dual boot 7 and XP, so when I deleted the XP partition, when I booted up it just said "Missing Operating System" and I had to re-install 7. Now, windows 7 says that my hard drive is 121 GB, when GParted says its 250. (or somewhere close to there. My hard drive is 250 GB) Whenever I try to resize or check the drive in GParted, an error comes up on both the GParted Live CD and Backtrack 4. It says "File system inconsistent, run chkdsk /f and reboot twice." (thank you spellcheck!) Whell, can't check a drive that my os is running on so I had to restart and it checked the drive at the beginning of boot. It checks it instantly and says "drive is clean". I don't know what to do next. Please help!!!

Hook the drive to a USB converter & plug this into a working Windows xp machine. From there you can run chkdsk on the attached drive. Alternatively you can boot from a Windows xp boot disk, choose 'repair console', & from that console you can run chkdsk.

like i said, chdsk didnt work. I went into gparted and just reformatted the entire drive and reinstalled windows 7. I needed to reinstall it anyway as it was getting slow.

You could share with us what worked, say thank you & go about your business. Or, you don't have to do anything at all.
But sharing the solution does allow others to fix their situation with what worked for you.
** Update **
Oh, nvmd, I see you already forced the solution ... just as well, nothing more on the topic is required.
