@Dark_Nexus and if the 'rules' helped define an area in which you could move about with out harming yourself (e.g. the ramifications that killing someone have on your psyche), would they not allow you to more freely explore the area the boundaries set you in?

The ten commandments and the subsequent two great commandments are expressions/confirmation of natural moral law.
