How to pick PMS colors from old design

Posted 11 November 2010 - 01:49 PM

Hi guys,

Is anyone familiar with or know a solution of how to pick out PMS colors from a design or logo? Does it need to be in a specific format? I searched around and it seemed as if the best way is to use a color swatch and pick out something that's close to the colors, but surely there has to be a better way?

Thanks,
Markus

Not quite sure what you're talking about but maybe it's this. When i'm painting a picture on my computer and the picture i'm painting is a picture on the internet i want the same color that is used in the picture on the internet so i just drag it into photoshop or whatever painting program i'm using and then i select the dropper tool that allows you to get the color off of a picture.

Hope that's what you're talking about and if it is i hope my post is easy to understand.

Thanks for the response Alex. Usually I do the same as what you mentioned, but this time I am sending some business cards to be printed and they wanted PMS (Pantone) colors. Like PMS 289 and so on. I'm not sure if photoshop has the ability to pick those out.

Would something like this help?

You could search the chart or just eyeball it.

There's probably something out there to translate hex colors to their corresponding panatone swatches. Might be a good idea to invest in a hand reference as well.
