need some help with a Jquery slider

Posted 15 November 2010 - 10:39 AM

Okay here's the problem I'm having. I'm using a jquery based slider on a website. It's a Jqueary powered unsorted list. You put something in the list between the <LI></LI> tags and it slides 'em. The problem I have encountered is that the images that are presently being controlled by the Unsorted List are all off set by about 20 pixels. So when you view slide 1, the right most 20 pixels of the last slide is viewable while the right most 20 pixels of the first slide is hidden until you go to slide 2. I'm not sure if this a css problem, or a Jquery problem so I'm posting in both forums looking for help on this. I've included links to all the Jqueary files the slider uses, but I'm not a javascripter and only know of Jquery, I don't know any of the technology behind it. I'm hoping one of you will be able to help me out with this. It is really racking my brain.

jquery.anythingslider.js
jquery.easing.1.2.js
jquery.min.js

add a padding: 0; to your .anythingSlider .wrapper ul in your css file
also, your width for the ul needs to be 10240px

.anythingSlider .wrapper ul {
border-bottom:3px solid #E0A213;
left:0;
list-style:none;
margin:0;
position:absolute;
top:0;
width:10240px;
padding:0;
}

Edit: worked in FireFox and Chrome, don't have IE to check it on though

Awesome. Thanks Nakor. Any chance you can explain why it was doing that? I mean is the image was 1024px wide, and the UL width was set to 99999px... shouldn't it be showing more rather then less?

Okay, now the slider has effectively stopped working. The slider will load the first image just fine, The buttons are changing as if the slider were changing but the slides are not sliding. I haven't changed anything in the javascript, but I know the CSS doesn't control that control that sort of thing directly, however it can break it. Any idea what became broken to stop the slide?

All three of the jqueary libraries seem to link just fine.
http://www.teenaids....ythingslider.js
http://www.teenaids.org/scripts/jquery.easing.1.2.js"
http://ajax.googleap...1/jquery.min.js

I really need help with this. The guy that was handling the slider function bailed on the project and I don't know Jquery. I know enough Java scripting to understand what I am looking at but that's it.

inside the divs that the slider programming applies to, the only things that have changed in the last 4 days is I changed the order of the slides (Slide 9 was supposed to be first), but that was just a matter of changing the links and src attributes.

I've checked the revision logs for the page and confirmed that I am the only person who has edited the page in the last 4 days (5 days ago I can confirm the slider was working).

Outside of the slider itself, I've updated the counter display which is just a <span></span> sequence. I've even tried restoring the page to the revision from 5 days ago when I know it was working, but the slider remains unchanged. Based on this, I'm lead to believe it's something with the Jquery files that are running the slider. The problem is I don't know Jqery well enough, or at all really, to be able to spot a problem in the coding.

it looks like your style got changed back. I went into it and the ".anythingSlider .wrapper ul" style looks like this

.anythingSlider .wrapper ul
{
    width: 1024px;
    list-style: none;
    position: absolute;
    top: 0;
    left: 0;
    background: #eee;
    margin: 0;
}

I change it to the following and it started working again

.anythingSlider .wrapper ul
{
    width: 10240px; // changed this
    padding: 0;     // added this
    list-style: none;
    position: absolute;
    top: 0;
    left: 0;
    background: #eee;
    margin: 0;
}

What's happening when we don't set the width of the ul to the value of the combined width of all the list items is that the items are getting stacked on top of each other rather than beside each other. So when it tries to move to the next image to the right (or left) there's not another image there since it is below it rather than beside it.

as for your first question, you could set the width to 999999px and it will work just fine. It was adding the padding: 0 that removed the bit of space that was appearing on the left originally. But since you can calculate the total width needed for the ul there's not really a need to have it any larger than that.

and the hits just keep on coming. I'm am having a new problem with the slider. This time it's not advancing to the 10th and final slide. It will scroll up to slide 9, the buttons will change to show that it's moving to slide 10, but the slide doesn't change. Then it cycles back to slide 1 like it should. Can anyone help me out with this one?
