deciding on antivirus software

Posted 08 December 2010 - 06:59 PM

Ok, so I got a particularly nasty bug on my machine (my fault). So I'm now looking for decent anti-virus products.

I narrowed my decision down to a couple.

1. Avast BART PE - I like this one because it has a bootable CD that uses a PE environment to run a virus scan. I've heard great things about it (except from a sales guy who kept trying to push Norton off on me). I have some questions about it and I'm going to call the company. it has a $150.00 price tag which is why I'm trying to find out all I can about it.

2. ESET NOD - I really like this software and have heard many great things about this company such as they re-build their engine every year plus their use of assembly language in the engine makes them very unique. Obviously this has the advantage of speed. Oh, and I wish this came out of the box bootable or this would hands down be the winner.

3. Kaspersky - Russian company that includes a bootable CD (a big plus). However they are using heuristical database which is a bit of an irritation.

I am not considering Norton because they haven't re-built their engine in the last few years and since my company's experience with endpoint, I am very hesitant to use them.

Anyway, does anyone else have an opinion about the above companies or one of their favorites?

I put the Avast free/home version on customers machines. Don't know why you'd dump $150 on it.

What does their code of choice have anything to do with the quality of the product?

You have a point.

Supposedly the assembly is supposed to have less overhead due to lack of interpretation (which I guess is true for anything short of something written in Java or something like that, so yeah, sales gimmick) but I thought it was cool.

Well, I would have assumed that an opinion would be based on fact, but maybe I should re-think that conclusion.

And fuck, do you have to suck the life out of everything.

If you run Windows, look into Microsoft Security Essentials. It's run incredibly on every computer I've ever installed it on (including a 6 year old Dell laptop).
