What is the best resolution for programming?

Posted 17 December 2010 - 12:53 AM

Everywhere on the internet, you hear people exclaiming how vertical resolution is king for programmers and more is better. However, I've heard people mention that a single screen can be TOO large and will actually hamper productivity. I'm just wondering, through your personal experiences, if there is such a thing as too much screen-space? Is it worth it to invest in those 2560x1600 monitors? is it best to simply put a 1080p monitor in portrait mode? or anything else along those lines...

I'm asking because I can't really afford to buy many different monitors of different sizes and try them out firsthand ;)

I use 2 monitors at work. They are 17" Dell monitors. I can get a lot done having things spread across two monitors (I work in web development so on one screen I have Visual Studio open and the other my browser to test). It works out quite nicely. At home, I have on 23" 1080p monitor. It doesn't work AS well just because I don't have that second monitor. It also depends on what kind of programming you are doing. I would say to get two monitors of the same size (maybe 22 or 23 inches) and that way if you need that extra screen real estate, you have it. I've had my eye on this monitor for sometime:23" Acer Monitor
