How would I make a program to identify specs?

Posted 21 December 2010 - 06:34 PM

Hey ya'll,

I am trying to make a program for fun, something like DxDiag, but much simpler...just something that will identify the OS Version, Hard Drive Size, Processor, RAM, Manufacturer of the PC, and what Browsers are installed. I am by no means an expert with programming, but I do know a bit. Any ideas on how I could start something? (NOTE: I want to do this from scratch so I can post it on my site for people to use, I don't just want to edit some pre-made thing).

Thanks in advance! :)

Do you have a language preference? A target audience? I know with .NET you can get quite a bit of that information - if not all of it - and packaged in a nice desktop app or web app.

The only language I actually know is Java as well as some html (syntax -- basic stuff with html). My target audience wouldn't really be anyone in particular either.

I usually just use Eclipse and make Java programs/fool around, but I am pretty sure you cannot do this in Java.

I hope this answers your question.

If I were to use the .NET how would I even start with it?

Thanks :)

Well.. well well.. You start by getting MS Visual Studios 2010 Express... it's free.. it rocks. Your choice of VB or C#. C#'s very c++'ie... which makes it very java-ie... so that might be the route.

Crack it open.. play with a 'windows app'... get familiar.. Then check out "system.windows.forms.systeminformation" namespace and the goodies involved:
