RAM & Processors - Argh.

Posted 07 January 2011 - 05:17 PM

Hey there.

This is just another question about a gaming build that I'm ordering parts for. I'm prettey sure at this point that I'll be going with the i7 950 processor, but I also want some really fast RAM. The current RAM which I'm thinking of will run at 2000MHz, but the max that the i7 950 will support is 1066MHz. Is there any way I can go into my BIOS and do some tweaking so that my RAM will run faster? (I've got a little experience over clocking processors, but that's about it).

Thanks in advance.

Edit: My apologies for posting in the wrong place. I wasn't quite sure.

you will need a motherboard whose BIOS allows you to change the RAM settings (there are around a dozen RAM related settings). usually the default settings are very conservative.

I've got the Rampage III Extreme, which is built for overclocking, so I guess that I will be able to do it. Can you confirm that?

I got my last motherboard (a ASUS A8R-MVP, an excellent MB for overclocking) about 5 years ago … so I guess I’m not up-to-date

Go to BIOS and look if there is a chance to change the settings. If this motherboard is built for overclocking then I guess it's possible.

Almost all modern day "Gaming style motherboards" have a BIOS which sets RAM timings. It is a very common thing to do these days. Almost everything in the way of gaming equipment is becoming overclockable... CPU, RAM, GPU too. The Rampage III Extreme is certainly overclockable... you can find a series of guides on this thread...

RAMPAGE III - Overclocking Guide

Some of the links may not work, but others do. So pick your version and it can give you tips for overclocking the board and adjusting timings. Make sure the RAM is also overclockable and I recommend you incrementally go up, test the RAM stability and inch your way up. It is a tedious process but it will help you find the sweet spot.

Also your board says it can go up to 1600 and then all the way up to 2200 when overclocked. So you definitely have some room. Just make sure your RAM is a good brand for overclocking and look for timings from others on the web.

:)
