Oh Canada...

Posted 13 January 2011 - 12:14 PM

Wow Canada, thumbs up on keeping it awesome! After reading some background on their attack of Howard Stern and other stations playing 'uncensored music videos' I am somewhat shocked. I thought you folk were mild mannered-easy going-fun loving-maple syrup chuggers. I wasn't aware behind the sexy white molded plastic veneer was a jackboot.

What other songs should be banned for being indecent?

I say take out Radiohead for these lines in "Sulk":

Quote

You are so pretty
When you're on your knees
Disinfected
And eager to please

‘Money for Nothing’ too offensive for Canada
(article)
Spoiler

Of course this could be just a giant agenda machine:

Quote

The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, a self-regulated industry watchdog, said that Rev. McVety disparaged gays in episodes that ran between July 2009 and February 2010 when commenting on Toronto's massive gay pride parade and a revised Ontario sex curriculum for grade schools.

The real problem is the milk in a bag. They hate having to move the refrigerators because the milk will often spill out. It was easier to pin the Dire Straights with anti-gay lyrics than admit to a design flaw in their dairy product distribution.

The milk in the bag is a giant ploy by the Pitcher Industry to stay relevant in a changing business environment. Who, in this day and age, owns a pitcher? I mean sure kids today could pirate them from bars, but that doesn't help the industry who requires monetary. I know they tried doing away with the right to resell pitchers at swap meets, but ultimately that started a backlash that lead to even less pitcher usage. Kids just died their hair with koolaid or ate it like fundip.

I noticed that a rock station here in Atlanta just recently started censoring that Dire Straits song. It's ridiculous that something can be played in regular rotation on radio stations for 20+ years, and all of a sudden a couple of people complain, and it gets censored. Most people need to pull the sticks out of their asses and relax.

Canadians can be an uptight bunch. Pretty much the entire country is into being politically correct so this was bound to happen sooner or later.

Fun fact: Canada's CRCT (the folks who regulate the radio and TV airwaves) has rules that say, depending on the format, up to 60% of what you play on air must be Canadian content.

So, milk in bags, poutine, staple diet consisting of beer and Tim Horton's...and Rush/Anne Murray 24/7.

Don't forget Celine Dion.

I think I'd end up killing a whole lot of people.

I noticed that the people here in Atlanta just recently stopped using the word nigger. It's ridiculous that something can be said in regular conversation at social functions for 200+ years, and all of a sudden a couple of people complain, and it gets stopped being used. Most niggers need to pull the cotton sticks out of their asses and relax.

There I fixed that for ya...

I do love the song and actually am not offended by it. And really I say see the 'fag' episode of 'South Park' for any qualms with the word, it's a word.

This is how (I heard) that Bob & Doug McKenzie characters were created. The CBC told 2nd City Television that they could have x minutes of extra air time, if it were devoted to Canada. I guess the representative said something smart-assed like : So what, we put two guys drinking beer, wearing toques, talking about back-bacon & using common Canadian slang? To that their reply was, yes, & if you could have them in front of a large Canadian map....

Is it safe assume that you're okay with the changes that are being made to Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn. It's a classic story that has been around for so long. Censoring entertainment is just ridiculous in my opinion.

No it's not safe, actually I thought it was ridiculous in 1998 when my school district was voting on if they should ban the book or not. I was just being sardonic with my mash up of your quote. Hence the small font below it.

If it's in there, it's in there for a reason. It's a look back in time, and that's how they viewed the world back then. To censor Huck Finn is akin to censoring out the Holocaust in history books, just because the content might be offensive. Yes it's offensive, but it's a part of history. People need to quit being politically correct douchebags. Just be polite, and if you're saying it as a joke, art, or otherwise purposeful context, then it should be known why it was there, and not to be taken seriously unless said so (say a KKK pamphlet). FFS!

No, what is offensive is equating censorship of a collection of words to the cleansing of a historical event where fifteen million lives were cut short.
