Buying a new gaming laptop! All opinions wanted!

Posted 23 January 2011 - 02:57 PM

HAY EVERYONE!

So, it's that time of year where I say to myself I need a new laptop. Considering this one is 2 years old and all, plus it was ex display. I'm going for a gaming machine. I need it to be portable, but powerful, so currently I'm opting for an ASUS G53Jw-IX62V 3D gaming laptop, but wondering if anyone else have any suggestions or the like?

I'm open!

[Edit] Specs on this: i7-940QM @ 1.73Ghz / GTX460M 1.5Gb GDDR5 + CUDA + PhsyX + 3D Vision Kit included / 8Gb DDR3 1333Hz Performance Memory / 640Gb HDD / Bluray RW drive / 15.6" 3D-HD Panel (120Hz). It's got some other stuff to make it a worthwhile choice; I.e dual cooling systems and dual overclocking facilities (intel + asus provide one each).

Yeah... if you want total overkill, go with Alienware M17x 3D. If you want normal overkill with portability, go for the M11x

Sure nothing beats an alienware if you spec it up to the high end and pay more for it than your car is worth. I've had an Asus G51Vx for about a year and a half, paid 1k flat for it and I'm pretty sure there's no alienware that'll touch it for even twice the price.
It uses a 1Gb Geforce GTX 260M with a 256 bit interface (you won't find that in many laptop cards) and I've run tons of games on max detail including crysis. The only complaint I would make if I had to make one is that the 1366x768 res is a little low, but for a few hundred more higher resolutions can be had.
I would definitely buy another asus gaming rig and would recommend them to anyone, so to the OP, go for it, you'll never get a better spec'd machine from alienware for the price.

@josiahmahar: The equivalently spec'd Alienware is £2000, doesn't offer 3D and bluetooth, and the warranty is god aweful; though I'm still considering it.

@Ticon: I've looked at those, but the graphics memory is DDR5, not GDDR5, on the ones I've found.

@Jack Eagles1: Didn't realize Alienware did a 3D version of the M17x, it's not a must but the 3D was just a bonus and a pretty sweet find.

@hookiethe1: True, I've had one Asus before and my desktop does have pretty much anything Asus I can possibly get in there ;D

It must be a laptop, I use my laptop for everything; my current is a desktop replacement. There's a reason I looked for a 15.6"er :P
Some good ideas though.

[Edit] Alienware M17x R.3 (With 3D screen) - £2804. That's a lot.
And it's a pretty baseline spec'd one too. 3D isn't worth that much, nor is any laptop, full stop.

GTX460M with 1,5Gb GDDR5 > GTX260M with 1Gb GDDR3 :P
G53Jw's chassis looks freaking AWESOME too ;)

[Edit]
Specs and Prices:
ASUS G53Jw

i7-740qm @ 1.73Ghz, Turbo to 2.9Ghz P/C, 8192MB DDR3 1333HZ, 640GB SATA, 15.6" 3DHD Screen, GTX460M w/ 1.5GB GDDR5 + NVIDIA 3D Vision, Win7 HP 64, Bluray RW, Bluetooth

£1,599 (At my chosen outlet)

Alienware M15x (Equiv spec)

i7-740qm @ 1.73Ghz, Turbo to 2.9Ghz P/C, 8192MB DDR3 1333Hz, 640GB SATA, 15.6" WideHD Screen (1080p), GTX460M w/ 1.5GB GDDR5, Win7 HP 64, Bluray Combo (read only), Bluetooth

£2,078.99 (as quoted by dell)

Alienware M17x-3D
i7-2630qm @ 2Ghz, 8192MB DDR3 1333Hz, 640GB SATA, 17.3" 120Hz 3D WideHD Screen (1080p), GTX460M w/ 1.5GB GDDR5 + Optimus + 3D Vision, Win7 HP 64, Bluray Combo (read only), Bluetooth

£2,558.99 (as quoted by dell)

Any other suggestions, I'm kinda open to the M15x still, a little, not sure - 3D is kinda tantalizing...

Saying this, the M17x looks pretty nicely spec'd, but for the price I'd ideally expect a little more graphics juice - considering I can get a much more powerful desktop (i7 sandy bridge @ 3.4Ghz, 1.5GB GTX580) for £100 more - portability comes first unfortunately).

If you must have a notebook PC for gaming I would go with this:

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834220845

Asus has a good warranty, it a 2 year and the first year covers accidental damage. Newegg also offers extended warranties, so you can add that to and still pay less than you would for an Alienware(Dell) with a one year warranty and no accidental damage protection( at least "free" accidental damage). There are some retail stores that have the G73 I think I have seen it for sale at Fry's and they also have extended warranties that will get you a computer to use if you have to have yours repaired, I haven't had to take mine in yet, but I have friends that swear by that warranty.

Shame I live in Britain, and am British. That's an amazing deal, I'd kill for a warranty like that. You hearing this, PC World?
