Want to embed video in Craigslist

Posted 22 November 2006 - 10:32 PM

I know very little HTML beyond bold and italic, but I know how to copy and paste, and if I get some inkling of how to get what I want, I'm willing to experiment.

I have a video on AOL's Uncut Video (which uses VideoEgg) that I want to embed in a Craigslist ad. And Craigslist doesn't make it easy. UncutVideo has code next to the video, but the Craigslist ad form doesn't see it. I was able to use HTML to get in a still image, though, so I think it would accept code that it likes. VideoEgg thinks so, too, but they're not going to help me tweak their code.

I'd appreciate any help in changing the code below:

<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=7,0,0,0" width="415" height="347" id="browser" style="padding:0;margin:0"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="movie" value="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/v0.6/uc_videoplayer.swf" /><param name="FlashVars" value="assetURL=http://pdl.stream.aol.com/aol/us/cvn/2006/10/6/5f1bcd7b09370061af61ac2099a34b73_dl.flv&duration=72&showExpandButton=false&expandFunctionID=expandVideo&assetID=5f1bcd7b09370061af61ac2099a34b73&wmurl=http://uncutvideo.aol.com/&pol=true&mvvis=true&mvurl=http://uncutvideo.aol.com/"/><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><embed src="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/v0.6/uc_videoplayer.swf" quality="high" bgcolor="#cccccc" wmode="transparent" FlashVars="assetURL=http://pdl.stream.aol.com/aol/us/cvn/2006/10/6/5f1bcd7b09370061af61ac2099a34b73_dl.flv&duration=72&showExpandButton=false&expandFunctionID=expandVideo&assetID=5f1bcd7b09370061af61ac2099a34b73&wmurl=http://uncutvideo.aol.com/&pol=true&mvvis=true&mvurl=http://uncutvideo.aol.com/" width="415" height="347" name="browser" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="always" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed></object>

Iíve gotten rid of all the junk in that code and re‐wrote it to be valid. Based upon some quick tests, it works in Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 6, and Internet Explorer 7; I didnít wait for the entire video to load in each case, however, since Iím on dial‐up. Hereís the code:

<object width="415" height="347" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/v0.6/uc_videoplayer.swf">
  <param name="movie" value="http://uncutvideo.aol.com/v0.6/uc_videoplayer.swf"/> <!-- This parameter is for Internet Explorer. -->
  <param name="FlashVars" value="assetURL=http://pdl.stream.aol.com/aol/us/cvn/2006/10/6/5f1bcd7b09370061af61ac2099a34b73_dl.flv&duration=72&showExpandButton=false&expandFunctionID=expandVideo&assetID=5f1bcd7b09370061af61ac2099a34b73&wmurl=http://uncutvideo.aol.com/&pol=true&mvvis=true&mvurl=http://uncutvideo.aol.com/"/>
</object>

And hereís a live example: http://jsg.byethost4...demos/DIC21233/.

Edit: Okay, so the DIC forum converted the character entities into actual ampersands thus causing the code to, once more, be invalid. Personally, that makes no sense for the contents of [code] tags since all ampersands must be encoded as character entities in XHTMLÖ Anyway, because of that, itís best to go to the live example and use View Source to obtain the code.

Thank you for taking the time to work on this.

When I copy the source code, do I start at object and end at object? I did that and other things, including copying everything, and it doesn't show up on Craigslist. When I try it on Blogger, it looks as though it's going to load but it doesn't, and the AOL code does work there.

I think Craigslist is making some effort to block such links, although there must be a way to get through when it's so easy to put in still images.

Yes.

I donít know what the limitations of Craigslist and Blogger are, but I wouldnít be surprised if either blocks use of the object element, since it can be used to serve a lot of other media besides Flash and thus possibly used to manipulate either the website or users or to simply be annoying. They also probably have the img element un‐blocked as itís safer since it can only display just that: non‐interactive images.

I've been able to embed video in my blog by copying Uncut Video code. For Craigslist, is there a way to embed it without using "object"?

You could try using the embed element, but itís not standard so Iím not going to take the trouble to mess with it. You already have the code for it in your first post; just get rid of everything before and after <embed Ö ></embed>. Canít say I know if itíll work in Internet Explorer though.
