freedom????thats a funny way to look at it...
i think every pc should come with certain software free and already installed...example windows + windows media player etc... obviously there will a be charge but when you buying a PC for R4000 then R200 won't make much of a difference...

Piracy doesn't. You can't easily get hold of the code and you're not allowed to distribute it or modify it without risking prosecution.
I have used piracy in the past and defended it the same way as you do but I'm in the process of becoming a 'born again' software user
The temptation is still there to download free stuff especially music which there isn't an alternative to but I can no longer justify piracy to myself when there are alternatives that I can use (I'm lucky enough to have redundant broadband lines and several PCs)
I think rather than 'infecting' all PCs with Windows

I tried loading Ubuntu onto my PC to try that out, but it made little to no sense. I imagine that if I had the time and patience to sit down and work it out, I could, but it got very annoying very quickly. I didn't think much of the support for it either.

These guys are heroes in my book.
Don't get me wrong, I've had some good warez in the past and am not entirely free from them yet, but it's me that has changed not the sw.
I got into Gentoo and it felt right, I got into legit free software and it felt right, and I believe in opensource/free software as an idea so I don't need warez anymore.
I've never had the cash to keep up with legit Windows compat. software so I've always gone searching for torrents etc.
Now I don't need to steal the software so I don't do so anymore and feel better for it. No one can scan my PC and use it's contents to prosecute me and I want to give back to the development communities.

Exactly my sentiments!!!!!
neways fooboo South Africa is currently going OPENSOURCE like no-ones business dude..its like a major fad/trend... its as Bort sed.. too much time/irritating/internet etc etc...btw music is a totally different issue...IT IS WAY WAY WAY WAY too expensive!!!!i'd love to hear opensource music hehehehehehe....napster should have never died...If an album is really good i'll buy it when i have the cash..but come on its just music at the end...atleast software does something useful (well most)...i will once again refer to South Park... Cartman starts the christian rock band.. explains alot.. basically the message i'm trying to get across is that even though mp3's are flying around like crazy...jay z still manages to get a gold seated toilet for his dog and britney gets anada boob job... where does the money come from then????mp3's should be free or they should cost like 5c a song...that way ppl won't even bother copying it from each other!!! neways i'm really tired and i think i couldn't even spell internet properly ...bah i'm going home...

opensource != free of cost, it just means you get to see the code when you obtain the proper license.
even if music was 1 cent per song, people would still circumvent the system. they don't do it because it costs too much, they do it because they don't want to pay money for it, period.
and music should not be free because
1) it's a skill you appreciate
2) if the artist does a show, you can't just walk in without paying
3) it's not how capitalism works (see point 1, and yes capitalism matters because the computing powerhouses the produce the great software you pay for, are capitalists ones)
the major reason an open source project's license cost nothing is because they hope that people who use the program will find bugs, report them, fix them, or just make overall improvements to the software. not necessarily because they feel they should do all the work and you should reap the benefits, but because they are more concerned with sharing the knowledge than making money.
if you have absolutely no interest in making any sort of improvements to open source projects (or at the very least absorbing some knowledge from them), you're probably just leaching off the system in place.
the fact that free open source exists to this day is thanks to many devoted developers who give up their time and brain power to projects for the simple fact that they were propagating knowledge in the world of computing and allowing other open source developers the luxury of using that knowledge without having to pay for it. to work properly, it has to be completely mutual.

LONG LIVE DEMOCRACY< LONG LIVE CAPITALIZM
Don't any of you FREE ballers realize that the only reason ANY software ever got produced is due to capitalizm?
Think of a world of programmers forced to write code because it was their government assigned job, with every thing you do checked and double checked by people who know nothing about you or what you dream of. Anything misunderstood by higher ups would be removed, innovative thinking would bad. Change would be bad. Linux is based on software created over 45 years ago, UNIX. Change is Baaad. It hasn't changed much since then, this is why it was so easy to go open source.
Bill Gates bashers - STFU
Microsoft did not begin LOCKING their software untill after Bill decided he didn't have to work any more. The NEW CEO and other EOs decided that too many people were stealing their software. They changed the MS porgrams etc.
If you'll remember, MS could have produced the best software protection systems from the beginning by including routines to prevent it imbedded in the OS.
BUT Bill Gates understood that for every ten copies pirated, he could probably sell three more to people that were exposed to DOS or WINDOWS by piracy that would not have even looked at it otherwise.
This is why DOS and WINDOWS as well as many of Microsofts games came unprotected. Bill realized that to become popular meant he would also become rich. The trick was to not enforce copyright law against anyone who wasn't RESELLING the pirated copies. This is why they were able to slip around the Software Monopoly charges. They simply showed that more computers were sold than copies of DOS or Windows. How can you have a monopoly when you can prove you don't own the market?
IF the government forced OPEN SOURCE CODE on us, which some people tried to do, there would be no incentive to produce superior technology, we would all still be using CP/M which is what DOS blew out of the memory water so to speak. Enjoy your Linux toy, it's all good. But don't go triing to control what you obviously don't understand, Capitalizm. CHANGE IS GOOD, INNOVATION IS GOOD, STAGNANCY IS BAD, PIRACY (selling someon elses work) IS BAD.
Giving away Copyrighted Material - is legally and morally wrong, but in the long run it allows improvements and ideas to be spread, and encourages more people to strive for even more, which is SOCIALLY GOOD and the overall ECONOMINC impact is inevitably an increase of sales for the product.
CASE in point. If you like to read Sci-Fi goto www.baen.com and visit their free library and read the posts in the Prime Palvers. These are High Quality writers and pulishers giving away their softprint of hardprinted book it total.
For text books http://www.nap.edu/info/site.html everything this company hardprints it offers in download for free.

That is great as long as no-one tries to IMPOSE this phiosophy on all software or copyrighted software.

any explanation for the, probably, millions of open source projects that have ever existed which are free of cost?

if anything, there would be MORE competition and incentive because all eyes would be on your code.

I didn't say all software was copyrighted or that there is no such thing as free or open source. But do you really think anyone would strive to produce DOS, WINDOWS, RED HAT, etc if they weren't going to gain from it?
Capitalizm breeds quality, freedom breeds social awareness. Free code examples and processes are great I encourage and use them myself, but to want to FORCE anyone to offer their product for free is ridiculous. Capitalizm works, freedom under capitalizm works. Forced freedom is Communism and has only worked in theory in the past.

way to string random, illogical thoughts together.
open source != free of cost
open source != communism
the POINT of open source is shared innovation and progress
and it's capitalism, not capitalizm
