Getting back partitioned memory.

Posted 08 February 2011 - 08:49 PM

I recently installed Linux Mint onto my HD, and partitioned 100GB to it. Now that it's on my HD, :
1) Is it possible to uninstall it, in case of emergencies?
2) Will that uninstallation give me back my 100GB that I partitioned for it?
Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

You can use GParted to remove a partition, & then resize the existing. It's a Linux program, so you may need to physically remove the hard drive & place it onto a Bootable Linux machine, &/or use a live distro.

Take out the actual hard drive?! And what do you mean by a Bootable Linux machine?

Because Gparted is a Linux program, you'll need to run it on a Linux machine. I'm assuming that the 100gb Linux install is the only Linux partition on your hard drive, & the other partition(s) are Windows. Thus, you'll need to live boot, or remove the hard drive & place it on a Linux Bootable machine. Meaning a Computer &/or Laptop that can boot Linux, mount the drive, & run Gparted to remove the partition & resize the drive.

In other words, I don't know a way to do it with Windows, but GParted works for what you are trying to do. However since you are removing the OS that is required to run the software, you have a hoop (or two) to jump through. The above is a description of how I do it. Sorry if it's a little over the top.

You assume correct.

So you're saying to get another HD that's running Linux to remove the partition that's on my HD?

That's how I do it. Either a 2nd computer, or use a Live boot disk.

You can use the Disk Management in Windows to shrink, extend and delete partitions. It is available with XP, Vista, and 7.

I m a windows user.Before some days I had installed Linux.After that uninstall it.And my windows os.

Then there is a facility in windows xp,they shows us our unused space. Then we can use it by creating new partition. But whatever data on that drive will be lost.

It is better to use disk management to get rid of it. That way (since I am assuming the GRUB bootloader is installed) you can use a program like EasyBCD to reinstall the original windows bootloader, to avoid torching your master boot record.

EaseUS Partition Manager! Just use this to extend the Windows partition over the Linux one and get rid of GRUB with a boot repair using your Windows CD.
