GOOD free hosting!

Posted 07 April 2001 - 08:58 PM

I've tried almost every free host from here to italy, and I've discovered quite a few things. #1. Most "free hosting" sites are kids with a cable modem that are running Xitami webserver off a spare computer. It's a novel idea, but they should only host their friends sites, and not pretend to be big businesess. I'm SICK of going to websites, especially sites that talk in "We" when there is only one 8 yr old behind the whole project. Nothing against 8 yr olds of course. heh heh

But I've found that the best free host there is, is http://angelfire.com . The banner is easily removed with some hex code (e-mail me and I'll pass it along to you) they support ftp, they are NEVER down, cept that time they got hacked.... AND they offer great support which is something that free hosts never do. You'll actually get an e-mail answer within a day most times! Usually within hours!

Anyway, give em a shout, and as long as you've got a backup free host that can host your cgi, you're golden. They allow SSI and ASP, so you're also good to go in that dept. Just my .02!

Yeah, brinkster makes you pay for the ftp access. I've read more bad things about brinkster than good. In fact, most of it's users agree to one thing, that they purposely cram all the free users on one overworked server, and whenever a problem occurs, they respond to your e-mails with "The paid service doesn't experience this..." or something similar. In fact, the day I registered for an account, I was in the middle of uploading a couple of graphic heavy test pages, and my uploads kept timing out rediculously, so I said to #### with it, and gave up. aspin.net or .com (I forget) has only bad reviews of the service. But that whole site seems a bit biased in my opinion.

i think its only sub domain, but if you want, get a real domain, make it your main page, and use the other pages as links to the angelfire

I was handed a link to the best free web host I've ever found. 25MB, POP3 mail, FTP access, ASP/PHP/Perl support, DATABASE support (I'm using an access database on it), no banners, no catches. I've read their TOS and there's nothing bad in it. You can upgrade to their pay service for as little as Ŭ a month.

Digtal rice IS good, but there is NO support (common with free services) and their downtime has been horrendus in my experience with them. I finally broke down and bought some good hosting at http://pcmajik.com I kinda owed him a favor since he's hosting a friendly site. ( http://planetsg.net ) Give em a shot! 9 bucks a month for some great deals! I bought a fancier package, but the 9 bucks a month is perfectly suitable!

angelfire , dang, haha. the first one i ever used, (besides homestead) probably cause its based in america. anyways, f2s is by far the best in my opinion, no banners and same amount of space as anyone else.
