Personally, I prefer something that doesn't put me through RPM-hell every time I want to update. :) Gentoo FTW!

which is why you get apt and synaptic for whatever distro you have. I'm running Fedora, but do you think that I use rpm ad yum to do my updating?

I had Fedora 7 on my laptop for a while. I have to admit, it's come a LOOONG way from the RH8.x, 9.0 days, when I first got into Linux. But the problem comes when you want to install something that's *not* in the repo... And The Fedora repo isn't that large compared to Ubuntu/Debian or Gentoo...

You can always add repos to get more packages. If it still isn't there, you can download it, and then open up the file by double clicking. It prompts for your password, and then continues. I really don't think it's a big deal.
I also don't like the ubuntu line because of it's baby-stepping way of doing things, and I could never get gentoo to work for me.

How is Ubuntu's hand-holding all that different from Fedora's? And yeah... Gentoo can be a b**ch... :)

I couldn't give you specifics on the differences between the UI in Ubuntu and Fedora because I have not used Ubuntu for a while, and I don't have VMWare. I just know that every time I thought I was going to switch to Ubuntu, I've always switched back to Fedora because I simply feel like I have more control over what goes on. Some things about the Ubuntu line are nice and done better than Fedora, like package management, but I've never stuck with Ubuntu.

Ah. I can barely remember what either of them look like. My only Linux install at the moment is my server, and that's not got X installed.

I don't know if I've just been lucky or if installing other versions has got me used to the process but I've installed Gentoo on a few machines now including my laptop and I've never had a problem.

I'm about to try installing it directly to a USB stick so I may have to eat my words but hopefully not :)

it kinda comes down to how well you know your hardware and kernel configuration skills. After you've rolled a kernel or ten, you get a little more comfortable with it. :)
