Learning Algorithms in Java

Posted 25 February 2011 - 06:05 AM

Hi there,

I've come to the stage where, I know how to use Java and I know how to write propper syntax and know how the language(classes, methods etc) are constructed. But that doesn't now make me a good programmer.
All that makes me is someone that knows Java theory.

What can I do learn how to use Java now to solve a certain problem, and what ways to go about solving a certain problem? As in algorithms, and generally getting in the state of mind, where you can solve problems effectively(That pretty much means writing good algorithms right?).

I.e. Gaining better skills in problem solving. If you could give me ideas on good books, websites, excercises etc, that would be great.

Thanks guys!

Write more programs.

It doesn't matter if you are getting paid for them or not. Build, build build.

building logic is not specific to any language. if u want to improve your skills there is only one method
for doing that ... BUILD as many programs as you can.
you can google for various problems ,
you can go to many websites that provide with question and organize competitions,
for practice you can go to the following thread.

http://uva.onlinejud...ejudge&Itemid=8

it has a lot of assignments, about 900 in first option , then there are problems with varying difficulty level.. you may wanna check that.
i myself am practicing from there, if you need any help, plz ask, i'll be happy to help...:-)
