Is it possible to create a local database

Posted 10 March 2011 - 08:16 PM

Is it possible to create a local database without internet connection?

I have searched but all they are giving me is I have to connect to a sql server.

I want to create a web page where I can input data and the data goes to the local database (preferably in drive C:).

Thank you very much :)

It is possible only if you use HTML 5. One link I found for you is http://blog.darkcrim...cal-databases/.
Google "html 5 local database" for more.

However it's currently supported only in a few browsers.

Client side data is usually stored in cookies. If you need to store data permanently, storing it on the server is the correct way.

Hey.

A SQL server is just a piece of software that acts as a server. There is nothing that says you need to connect to the internet to use one. You can set it up on your own machine and connect to it there, usually via "localhost", a socket file or shared memory.

A lot of web developers do just that when developing their code. Saves them the trouble of having to use an online server.

Gets a bit more complicated if you need to sync that with an existing server online, but that's doable as well.

Which type of SQL server are you trying to use? (MySQL, Microsoft SQL, Oracle, etc...)
Some are easier to install/use than others. I'd recommend MySQL for a beginner.

Local database are easy. There are many. Interacting with them using just a web page is a bit of a challenge. Web browsers are all designed to NOT let you access local data, beyond accepted methods like cookies. However, they access web sources by design.

My first choice for using a web page to store local data would probably be CouchDB. It can be interacted with solely through technologies available to a web browser. There's now even a simple Windows installer. This is a NoSQL database, but the methodologies are quite webby, to the point of using Javascript in the engine and working with JSON objects natively.

I would like to run the database at my home computer.
I have both MySql and Oracle as databases.

So it is really possible to create a local database. I just have to set it up and connect to it via localhost.

Thank you for all of your answers! :D

I'll try the HTML 5 too :D

Thank you again! :D
