i don't think it's a problem in either case, i was just pointing out that the cigarettes seemed like small potatoes in the context of the film in question.

agreed, people need to learn that animated films today doesn't necessarily mean 'family friendly'.

Rango is rated PG

Given that smoking, drug references and tequila are all in the movie trailer... It shouldn't come as a surprise they are in the film.

Because every kid who watches a western takes up horse back riding and blowing people away with revolvers for no particular reason...

Seriously, given the usual quantity of homicide in any given action flick, smoking is suddenly a concern? And drinking, because it can honestly kill you just as slow tobacco, still seems cool? Why no get the booze out of movies and sports commercials and... oh, right, larger special interest.

Is smoking even cool anymore? It doesn't seem to be.

The movie is clearly marketed to kids. It's animated. It has talking animals. Hell, it even has a toy line sponsored through Burger King I think. I can see where people might suggest that depicting characters that drink, smoke, have sex, shoot smack and murder people might not be the best idea.

This is a public perception that aught to go away though.

Animated anthropomorphic animals does not necessarily mean 'for kids'. And there is a large market (namely my generation) who are expecting this kind of film, but with adult themes. We grew up on Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Bevis & Butthead, etc... we want more, and we want dicks, booze, and all sorts of adult themed humour in it!

So to say that animated talking animals is 'clearly' directed to children is rather naive.

Are you suggesting that parents should take the time to read the ratings and actually reflect upon their meanings and possible ramifications?

Further, are you suggested that parents should actually provide 'guidance' to their children and not just 'accompaniment to the theater'? That might require the parent to later have interaction with their children of a deep and meaningful level. It might force some parents to explain that even though they, the loving parents drink, smoke and do drugs in front of the little tykes that it is wrong and the child should never to it themselves. Which in turn might cause a couple parents to re-examine whether or not they are in fact being a decent role model or a decent parent at all.

What good could ever come of that?

Better to just make all shows about rainbows and unicorns. That way the parents never ever have to interact with their kids or face up to their own reality, hypocrisy or shortcomings.

This was popular among the preschool set when my kids were smaller.... obviously, there was no LSD involved:

I'm sorry. I have to raise protest with my own suggestion.
I feel that we as a nation should not influence our children with a constant bombardment of rainbows because it will cause them all to turn gay.

With the movies I watch, if they're not smoking when they're done they did it wrong!

I was probably the target audience for this one. I was in college when it came out. We all got drunk and laughed our asses off.

Oh, how soon they forget.

Warner Bros was sick and tired of Disney's rainbow enema and introduced a Bugs Bunny prototype as early as 1938. Wielding a carrot like Grocho did a cigar, Bugs was the studio's stated antidote to the sugar overload of other animation.

Bugs will make appearances with many adult celebs of the '40s and '50s. Bugs will smoke, drink, curse as much as permissible, enacting any popular vice of the time. He slings World War II propaganda with the best of them, appearing in notables like "Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips" and Herr Meets Hare, the former being too politically incorrect to get past any modern censor.

At some point, animation was surrender to children. However, some cartoons and animation have always been for adults.

I watch a lot of westerns and they are always smoking like chimneys. I quit smoking so sometimes when I watch them I get the urge to smoke again, but I don't do it. CAUSE I'M AN OAK.

Speaking of good westerns I just watched Dead Man with Johnny Depp and that shit was surprisingly good.

Doesnt one of the previews for the movie say something like "Not all animated movies are made for kids"?

Simple solution, dont take your kids to see it.
