Disaster Exercise?

Posted 11 March 2011 - 02:02 PM

Has anyone participated in a disaster scenario before? I am thinking this might be kind of cool. It's 7am to 2pm on a Saturday... I might still be sloshed from that morning.... er.. 2am bar call time. I am 50/50 if I feel being the contaminated individual or a casualty. If I am contaminated I can dredge up some old clothes and some poor person's gotta cut them off my bulk and frame. Hmm.. how much shame do I have? At this age - not much.

Any thoughts or comments folks? Someone's had to have done this before.

You will be participating as a mock victim of a Toxic Industrial Chemical, Improvised Explosive Device. You will be triaged and either directed or transported to an area where decontamination will occur, potentially including cutting of your clothing. We would appreciate you wearing a bathing suit under loose fitting clothing and wear shoes that can be easily removed. Please bring a change of clothes and a towel. It is recommended that jewelry, cell phones, pagers and other valuables be left at home.

Quote

Before the event, you will be given a complete orientation to the incident site, the type of injury or symptoms you should simulate and what actions are expected of you. Before, during and after the event, liquids will be available to you. Breakfast and lunch will also be provided for those participating in the exercise. Restrooms will also be available for your convenience.

2. Some volunteers will be “painted” with simulated injuries. If you are willing to participate in this portion of the drill, please check the box on the online registration form at www.volunteersolutions.org

3. Volunteers should wear old, comfortable, loose-fit clothing and easily removable shoes. Drill organizers recommend that jewelry not be worn and purses/backpacks and other personal items such as cell phones be left at home.

4. Once the exercise begins, volunteers are asked to remain in their roles until its conclusion at 2:00 p.m., barring a real life emergency. Full participation ensures a productive drill.

5. All participants will receive a Certificate of Appreciation during the check-out process.

Quote

If you have never participated in a disaster exercise drill, I promise you an interesting experience. An
actual disaster could be devastating – our goal is to be prepared as much as possible should disaster
strike.

Once in Las Vegas at McCarren airport. I was part of the team of make-up people getting 'victims' ready for the exercise. Everything from slight cuts and bruises to compound fractures to bits of shrapnel embedded in the person.

The most fun was the corpses. The students would check for a pulse on someone they new was just playing a corpse, yet there was actually no pulse at the neck, wrists or ankles because of the latex appliance glued on.

It quits being a game to them when they really experience a lack of pulse, or see a bolt pushed through someone's hand, with blood oozing out.

I live in Florida, and we get the occasional tornado, so every now and then my school makes us get under our desks or sit in the corner of the class with our heads between our legs.

It's pretty boring, but it's good information and it wastes about 30 minutes of class time :)

To mitigate the creep factor Ariana Grande was born on June 26, 1993 (thanks IMDB). Apparently she's 5'1. Short.

disaster exercises sound interesting: getting peed on less so. It does seem a bit over-the-top, but it seems like a popular topic among every level of society: what do you need in a SHTF situation? Usually all I see is "I have a bag with a gun and a thousand rounds of edible amunition that weighs almost nothing! if there's nothing to shoot, I can eat my gun!" threads in various places.

Long story short, terrorist attacks don't seem like a useful thing to plan for. More useful, especially here (southeast Asia), would be short day-or-two-long courses of "theres no help coming for at least a week, here's how you make a water filter from mud, coffee grounds and cow shit: here's how you find food. here's how you make a fire, here's how you make a boat from plastic sheeting if you have it or a flotation device from your pants if you don't. Here's how you stop bleeding: here are three ways you can prevent infection in a deep puncture wound, depending on what you have available (cauterization, caustic chemicals, antibiotics). Here is how you boil water in a leaf. Here is how you store food so that animals can't get it." and so on, etc etc etc. It might sound foolish and useless there, but remember Katrina? bad things happen even in developed countries, and help doesn't always happen within a month. At the top of the list of skills to have are emergency first aid, creating shelter, skills for getting out of dangerous environments (especially expedient skills that don't require a big toolset and oodles of time to implement), skills for getting fresh food and clean water, and skills for rebuilding everything that was broken.

Isn't it weird of a videogame to let you pee on kids? Or to make cars start burning after you pee on them?Or to pee on gorillaz?I guess i have just found Area 51 (+18 :P )

At school we only did the thing that if the school was on fire...We only ran outside through the right exit and make fun of the cleaning lady, she was cleaning the windows, from the inside, while the "fire" was taking place :)) And in the end we all were like "The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire, we don't need no water, let that mothefucker burn" :))

And the redhead chick (from like 10+ posts above) is kinda hot...with those boobies she can get at least the rank of 3rd wife in some muslim countries... :P

Disaster response exercises are a necessary part of disaster training and planning and since they're asking you for your assistance in your area they could one day benefit you directly.

The disaster cause (like a previously mentioned terror attack) isn't what's really important. It's the responders and planners seeing if their preparations withstand the chaos of an actual event is what matters and is what they're exercising.

Many, many moons ago I was managing the workers' comp program for an electric utility that operated a nuclear facility amongst their many generating stations. You'd be surprised the things the local hospital had to have on hand in the event of an exposed, contaminated worker and the procedures they needed to go through without fail to get the worker from the plant to the hospital without contaminating half the county doing so. Interesting stuff to be sure.
