A couple weeks ago I went to the local fair w/ my family, and there was a dunk tank w/ the clown that ridicules everybody. So after my brother in law couldn't dunk him, I went up there and the first thing he says over his intercom is: "look at this computer nerd", I started laughing. I dunked him 3 out of 10 tries, so I was happy.

The IT club at my school reminds me of the land of Misfit toys though, there are some strange ones in that group.

I remember magic! I wasn't super into it, but I had a green/white deck with an avatar of... something. 8/8 trample. I remember always having so much fun mounting that bastard on a pegasus and winding up with a 9/9 flying trampler. Only ever successfully did it twice in a game, won both games two or three turns after.

I wonder what happened to that deck...

As for the rest of it, I was never big into DnD but I did get a few of the rulebooks from used bookstores and so on. The ones I really got into were Exalted, Vampire (Masquerade), Alternity (by far the best system and several of the best settings I've seen in any RPG, ever) and probably my favorite game of all time, Paranoia.

Then there was warmachine and confrontation and warhammer 40k...

I dunno, I guess definitions of the word "nerd" vary. I generally consider gamers to be nerd wannabes, if they are gamers only. People who are programmers but can still pass off normalcy would be classed regular nerds. In my mind the people who earn the title "super-nerd" are the ones who spend their Friday nights writing their own command shell for their unix server or some crap like that, just because they think it's fun.

some guy in my programming lectures only seems to wash once a week and change his clothes once a month or so, his wallpaper is generally a half naked anime girl/child/thing. I would consider him a super nerd, but considering I study Computer Games Programming there aren't that many of them on the course. I expected way more.

This is me. I code Java and post on DIC for fun on a Friday night. I love math and the Syfy channel, too. So I guess that makes me a supernerd (call me McLovin'). However, I draw the line at anime.

I just don't enjoy anime. I'm pretty nerdy in the sense that I like to know shit. I also go to the gym, run, etc. I don't fit the physical stereotype. My love life is about on par with the stereotype =p

I'm not much for exercising, and I'm not all that social in real life. I don't fit the stereotype where I cannot interact with people. I just don't enjoy group-oriented activities. In fact, my hell includes project management, going to the beach, and going to the mall.

Some days ago me and a friend got to talk when we was smooking during our break...
And we both agreed that out of the maybe 20 people in our cs class maybe 15 of them were super nerds...
Donīt get me wrong here, im just as nerdy as the next programming, magic playing, N900 hacking guy but these people in my class is insanely nerdy!

This is in denmark and it is a danish class but one of them only talks english, a group of 4 whips out their magic cards at every break even the 10 minutes ones.
When me and my freinds talks about their kids and what else goes on in our lives, the "Super nerds" laughs about the teacher using 1.1.1.1 as a mac address on the board because he did not want to write out a whole mac address...
One guy sits and shouts out duke nukem qoutes every 10 seconds...

Do you have these kinds of people at your school or work place?

You just described my entire day.

Feels good to be in a group of my peers :D

I AM one of those guys! LOL... 1.1.1.1 as a mac address!

Btw, I am all tapped for mana and about to cast my lord of the pit, a 7/7 flying creature with trample. I am soooo going to smoke this guy. Hopefully I can do it otherwise I have to start feeding this thing with my army of 1/1 goblins. So after this post I am going afk for a second while I play this turn.

If only Duke Nukem was here, he would tell me what to do if the mission fails!

*sigh*

I will try to redifine my point with martyrs answers...

1. 1.1.1.1 as a mac address is funny but the "super nerds" make it a 6 hour conversation, thats a little to much me thinks.

2. I love magic, i got 800 cards not counting my mana cards... But to try and play a game in a 10 minute break is just madness....

3. Duke nukem is awesome, but itīs all the time he sits there shouting... Itīs quite frustrating when trying to get work done...

Letīs call them annoying instead

To call this kind of person a nerd is a disservice to the term and unwarranted flattery to anybody that falls into this group. There's a difference between being a nerd and being socially retarded. At least nerds can figure out "Oh, I smell, perhaps my washing function needs to have its parameters updated" and get it right after a few tries.

So what you're really trying to do is make yourself feel like less of a super-nerd by mocking the people who do all the same things you do, but slightly more psychotically?

Let's apply this logic elsewhere:

Scene 1: You're a high school, second string quarterback. The first string QB is a kick ass player. You spend your time running about mocking "super football boy"... haha, all super football boy wants to do is play football! Look at super football boy... playing with his stupid ball again! haha.

The outcome: 5 years later, super football boy has an NFL contract worth millions and you spend your Sundays, Mondays (and sometimes Thursdays) in a recliner telling your fat, bald buddies how that should have been you.

Scene 2: You're 9 years old. There's a kid in your class who is reading at a 12th grade level. He reads constantly... always has his nose stuck in a book of one variety or another. You also enjoy reading, but aren't as proficient or adamant as super book-reader boy, so you mock him on the playground. Everyday, you make his life hell because he's not like you.

The outcome: Super book-reader boy goes on to an ivy league scholarship while you go to state school and spend your time mocking the students who aren't like you.

Seeing the pattern here?

The facts, as I see them:
(1) You are a CS major in college
(2) You play Magic (and have over 800 cards)
(3) You enjoy Duke Nukem
(4) You also find the mac address joke to be entertaining

My interpretation: You are also a super nerd. Perhaps if you spent more time worrying about yourself and less time worrying about what everyone else is doing before, during, between and after classes, your life would be a much happier place.

I don't really understand how playing a game can make you a nerd. Yes, if you're playing card games, or have a while(beer() ) drink(); t-shirt, or something close, you're a geek, but not close to a nerd.
Nerds are losers what memorise things that they don't understand. (and i'm not refering to PI, or anything like this). For example, i have classmates that participated to th history olimpics, even though they suck at history, and they don't even like it. Or kids that learn algorithms inside-out, but they don't have a clue on how it works. On my criteria, somewone that programs in binary and knows what does every byte that he / she writes, we have (certainly) a geek, but not even close to a nerd.
Between nerd and geek is a verry big difference, that many people miss (at least, in my oppinion, there is).
On the card-games in 10 minutes breaks, i don't think you're right. If it's their passion, let them play their lives out.Just think like this : If they were skaters, and trying some kickflips in the 10 minute break, they wouldn't be nerds, right? But in the begining of what i writed, you have seen that card games (or D&D, or anything else) don't make you a nerd.
I guess they are 100% geeks, but not nerds, i guess :)
