in which case you should try a different sata port,

I believe he said he tried that.

use a different sata cable

.. and this.

or buy a new drive

.. and did this too.

Also your post #13 - how does that help if it doesn't recognize the drive to even attempt to format it?

about 6 months ago i created a 40gb partition for use with ubuntu.
making this unviewable by windows once installed..

booting from disk allows you to view all connected drives and format them accordingly --so they can once again be used by windows.

if its unreadable at this stage, he will likely have to buy a new drive.

... or his motherboard is dying.. or the power supply is spiking. I have experienced both and no amount of reformatting would work.

yerhh.. needs a system rebuild really.
could delay by trying something like this.
bear in mind transfer speed would be painfully limited

Have you tried resetting your Bios? I have built a few sytems with this same board in the past. I seem to remember having an issue like yours when installing a new SATA drive with existing IDE drives present. The bios can be a bit quirky. A full reset of the bios usualy did the trick. The bios seemed to not want to look at an unformated SATA drive while formated IDE drives were present. I think the newest bios update resolved the issue but am not positive since it was a while back.
