Also your post #13 - how does that help if it doesn't recognize the drive to even attempt to format it?
about 6 months ago i created a 40gb partition for use with ubuntu.
making this unviewable by windows once installed..
booting from disk allows you to view all connected drives and format them accordingly --so they can once again be used by windows.
if its unreadable at this stage, he will likely have to buy a new drive.
