point of sale tutorial/basic code

i'm looking to create a basic POS system for a video game store. something that stores the inventory but also has trade prices of all games. i want to be able to make a sale and print off receipt. ideally i would like to be able to scan things. is there any sort of basic POS system code that I could then customize to my liking. i'm thinking the printing of receipts would be the hardest part to do. i have some experience with my sql databases, so i wouldn't have a problem creating the game and inventory database. any ideas on how to create this system without starting completely from scratch (don't think i could do it completely)?

Since Java abstracts over many of the details of the OS, all you have to do is tell the computer to print. Java comes with a printing API that is actually rather decent:

So, format the information how you want, and sent it to the printer.
