IPv6

Posted 12 January 2007 - 04:33 PM

I was wondering if anyone here has switched over to IPv6 in their home, gotten IPv6 from their ISPs, or both? How difficult was it? I know it's simple as pie for in the home, but how about with the isp? Marko, i'm looking at you.

Well, IPv6 could be a big process, especially when it comes to an ISP.

There is a fair amount of support for it with modern operating systems, I know OSX comes with it enabled by default now, so for inter-network it wouldn't be hard to implement.

When it comes to the outside world, its just not ready. There is only a tiny percentage of live IPv6 addresses in the publicly-accessible internet right now.

The adoption of IPv6 has been slowed by the introduction of classless inter-domain routing, Basically the 128 bit IPs, which is pretty much the whole point of the changeover.

IPv4 has 32 bit, But it's really not a huge change, in fact it wouldn't be hard to get everything to support it all. It's just that there is so many CPE's out there, so many routers, equipment, software and everything its almost like it would all have to be on the same page, at the same time.

However, a lot of applications and such would need little or no change to work with IPv6 except protocols that embed network-layer addresses such as FTP.

IPv6 is designed to be backwards compatible, but a lot of IPv4 based software and hardware without the updates and such won't know what to do with the new technology just yet.

I wouldn't mind taking on a new project, changing my home network over to IPv6...
