Desktop Randomly Shutting Off

Posted 25 April 2011 - 11:27 AM

So, yeah for some reason for the past week, my computer will just shut off on me. There are no error messages just shuts off. It only happens when I play MW2 and Fallout New Vegas though. It didn't happen when I used to play BFBC2. I just want to know are there any probable cause for this like my PSU going bad or something else. Just common reasons why. I'm willing to replace everything in it as I do plan on making a new computer this year. Thanks and if you need any more information please do ask.

Most likely cause would be overheating. Most computers shut themselves off when the core temperature exceeds some threshold - usually >120 degrees.

Not sure what configuration you have on your PC and what OS - but a program like RivaTuner should be able to let you monitor the temperature and confirm if that is indeed your problem.

You may have blown capacitors in your power supply. When there is capacitor failure on the motherboard, you will see BSOD errors & reboots, when they are in the power supply you'll get phantom shutdowns.

If your system was overheating you should see a warning message in your Windows Event viewer stating that it shutdown because of a system failure.

Unfortunately I can't see anything happening on my computer for when I start it, it just turns off then on then off
Ten on, I think that you get what I mean. I was thinking that e problem was with the PSU for I only spent $25 on it. I plan on building a new computer so I'll have to save up money for that. Thanks guys.

When this happen i use EVEREST which is payed but it shows the info about the temperature of almost everything. There is perhaps a free software out there that do the same if you have time you can check it. As LaughingBelly say if its overheating see if something go above 120 degree. Btw just for me do you get any other strange results like freezing the PC before restart or just restart? If as you say happen only when playing Fallout this looks to me like your video card is overheating. Also check if your fans works too. If i recall correct when my PSU had blown capacitor my PC simply dont start at all

Make sure your not choking the air supply and put the laptop on a solid surface. You can try some duster and a)see if there is a lot of dust. and B) try to 'hear' if the fans are moving well.

so glad I could help, next time be a little more specific. and an update on a resolution would be nice, rather than just bashing me for trying to help. :;) :

I wasn't bashing you. If I made you feel that way, I apologize I never meant to cause any harm upon anyone. The resolution was I built another computer. I didn't really want to play guessing game to see which part was crap as others have said, it may be the power supply. The power supply I purchased for it was around $25 as I've already stated. Therefore I would expect that may be the culprit for how cheap it was. That was my first build. My recent build is a lot more stable as I knew of the mistakes which I made previously.

Necroposting is frowned upon first and foremost. Second, there's a difference between tasteful jesting and this. Watch that line or become a swampie in the Caffiene Lounge.
