Create Clickable Buttons Using HTML

Posted 14 January 2007 - 07:57 PM

Im currently using this code:

<FORM METHOD="LINK" ACTION="my link here">
<INPUT TYPE="submit" VALUE="button text here">
</FORM>

This works fine for what I need, but Id like a more customized looking button. I dont have any type of software to generate my own custom button gif, so Id like to ask if there is a way to customize the look of the button using only HTML (i.e. color, font, size, and mouseover properties)

Id appreciate any help.....

Thanks

hmm... never actually tried to change the color of a button before? But as far as height and width, I believe you can just use the height="x" and width="x" attributes. I'm pretty sure you can only use javascript to do mouseovers though.

Im sure for the onmouseover cmd I could use something like this

<a href="random site"><img src="original.jpg" class="domroll hover.jpg">

but this would require me to have images for the source. The original code that I posted above has a mouseover effect that causes the borders of the button to turn an orangish color, im not sure how that code causes the button to do that... But, I can go without a great mouseover effect if someone can just give me a better type of code to use. Im really not digging the whole "default grey" button that Ive got going now.

Thanks ahead for anymore replies.

Well, in using a simpel link you can do some of this. It won't look the same as a button but you can get some effects.

here is a sample of what I mean:

<a href="#"><img src="image1.png" onmouseover="this.src='image2.png'" onmouseout="this.src='image1.png'" alt="Click Me"></a>

You can change the appearance of elements using CSS. Just keep in mind that browsers are not required to allow you to style form elements in this way, so some or all styles applied to them may be ignored depending upon the browser being used to view your page.

Here’s a CSS‐based example:

CSS:
input {
  background-color: tan;
  color: black;
  border: 1px dotted black;
  }
input:hover {
  background-color: black;
  color: white;
  border-color: silver;
  }

HTML:
<input type="submit" value="Submit">

Here is one button site:
http://www.freebuttons.com/

Also with Arbitrator's code, it won't work on IE, due to the psuedo events.

Correction: It won’t work for Internet Explorer 6. It should work with the latest version of that browser (version 7).
