When I think of a job being a means to an end, I think of the kind of job you are perpetually looking to leave... where you spend your evenings staring glassy-eyed at the classifieds section of the newspaper searching for something... anything... to take you away from the nightmare you walk into every morning. In this sense, my job is absolutely not a "means to an end". I don't peruse want ads. I have no reason to look elsewhere for work. I plan to be here until retirement... in my high-back, leather, executive chair. I love my job.

No way. My current job is the best I could ever ask for. I'm working with people who I've known for a long time and who I adore. The entire company has been very welcoming and exceptional.

I do consider my current role as a means to an end, in the sense that it is part of my growth and development, and is not likely the role I will be doing at retirement.

Same, you would soon get bored, doing nothing! I think that if I acquired a very large amount of money I would do full-time charity work as a philanthropist.
To answer the OP's question. Given the choice, I choose to live to work. But that's not always the reality is it? I will work to live when I have to...

I would probably still work, but I'll tell you one thing. I would work less.

Yes, I love programming, but only when it's for things I'm interested in. If it were up to my I would obviously work less and spend more time doing things I like (other than programming).

Sadly, the (wrong) end arrived for me yesterday, after two months of long hours, even on weekends.
