Well, you need a way to tie into it, traditionally it is using a proxy (privoxy for linux) and have those programs use the proxy.
It doesn't automatically set all your routes to it.

Yep, you need to set up Firefox and such to use TOR. The TOR package comes with a proxy server which runs on your computer and you route your software to it with an internal IP address.
If you are looking for a configuration-less TOR browser, I would look into TOR Park, which is a modified, self-contained Firefox with TOR, and it's portable. - http://www.torrify.com/

TOR will NOT hide your internal IP address though.
I've been trying to figure out how to do this but have yet to figure out a way to.

The internal IP address is meaningless.
I always find it amusing to go to www.ip-adress.com to see where it says I'm located when tor is on. (Usually russia
)
