As the question implies, I am looking for a way to install updates to my Ubuntu VM without having to also install all the crap they try to put into it (like open office and firefox and all the other stuff).
At the moment I have 3 GB free space left on my VM and don't want to increase it because I am running low on disk space on the host.
Is there a way to install the minimum required for the new version of ubuntu? Or am I forced to install everything?

I tried to do that but my ubuntu wouldn't recognize that I had the CD in the slot even when I moved "boot from CD" to the first option in the grub boot order. I suppose it just wasn't meant to be.

Odd.. I was able to boot from it a few versions back when I was checking it out.

Why not remove the software you don't want? If the packages aren't there your system can't update them. Ubuntu supports pretty easy distro upgrades via the package manager.

Some of the bloat is part of the base system and if you attempt to uninstall it takes the rest of the base system with it. At least that's how it used to be.

It is all already uninstalled, the OS update it just trying to install it along with what I want, and there is no way to unselect packages from the distribution upgrade... at least that I have found.

I googled apt-get blacklist. Apparently you can lock package versions. I don't know if you've already tried this.
