port forward switch box problem?

Posted 07 May 2011 - 06:56 PM

hey yall so i got a problem that i cant figure out.
I have a modem/router supplied by comcast.(yes i have to use it and yes i know the difference between a router and modem)

The problem being is that the router is not wireless and is in my basement, so i ran an cat 5e ethernet line up stairs and pluged it into a switch box.

When i forward the ports i can receive incoming info for example a p2p client.
But when i set up a vnc server on my pc or a web server on a security system, it doesn't work.

strangest thing is that when i plug the cat 5e line into the security system it works. or if plksug it into the pc the vnc server works.

I have tried a router on access point mode, and an actual switch box.

If anyone else had the same problem and fixed it i would love to know
thanks

I would put a phone call into your ISP, to make certain that they allow inbound traffic on those ports.

You can verify this by using a non default port, such as 8080 for web.
