Game Programming Challenge: Create a Game Design Document

There are often questions in the forum about how best to write up and plan a game out. The write up of a game usually takes the form of a Game Design Document(GDD).

The challenge is to write a GDD for a game based around </dream.in.code>. It can be 2D or 3D and designed however you want but it would be best to stick to something you feel would be plausible for better practice :)

Here are some links to give an overview of a GDD

http://www.gamasutra...e_Developer.php

http://www-personal....entTemplate.doc

http://guildhall.smu...inction_GDD.doc

You do not need to make GDD's with this much detail but fit in as much as possible to really show how the entire game would work. Have fun!

This sounds fun but I have to do the same thing for college (though not the same game of course lol) so will not have a chance to do this. Might post mine though!

I'll definitely do this when I find time. I always have game ideas runnin' through my head. If only I had the patience to actually finish one :(

Staycrisp,
Thanks for those links. I need to review them.

I like the idea of writing a Game Spec. Even if it doesn't fit the above templates it helps to think and write about your game. If you can't do this then there's a good chance you're not ready to start coding. It's really important if you work on a team. The spec becomes your 'Bible' and everyone agrees and sticks with the design.

For those of you with 'great' game ideas, I would challenge you to write a spec for this idea. It's a wonderful way to get closer to seeing your game become reality. There are coders who love to code...who don't have a 'creative' bone in their body. A written spec is a cool way to get them on board with your project. Of course, game programming is hard, so it's important to keep this in mind when writing the spec.

Here are a few small specs I created. They're not perfect, but I referred to them frequently.
Cindy and the Cookie Stealin' Ogre

This was the first successful team project. It was 4 weeks long. The game was not fun but it sure was organized. Two friends worked on the artwork and the music. Incredible. Again actual game play stunk.
Climbing the Citadel

Handwritten spec. Factory Game (Tetris-like clone).

I've been working throughout the day on a better spec for a new project. I'll take a look at the links above.

Regards,
ChuckBRegards,
Chuck

This guy advised me a lot in getting into games, and pretty much gives the best advice on every aspect of game development from hobbyist to pro. I suggest you read "Lesson #2. Basic Outline For a Game Design document." to focus your efforts. :)

Hey,
I know this is an old topic, but I want to write my first GDD for a game, even though it sounds good in my head :P

Can you add to the following list of some more things i should include?
  • Story
  • Characters
  • A basic feature list
  • Audience and what our goal is
  • Concepts

My concepts are so crap, but they visualise what I see in my head :)

Any help would much be apreciated :)

People always forget to mention the control scheme for the chosen platform! :)
