I think that the subject of this debate is less about whether or not we want more guns on the streets; but more about whether we want to give law-abiding citizens a chance to defend themselves. After all there is little evidence to suggest a negative correlation between stricter gun legislation and gun-related crime, or that there is any link at all.
Personally, if I heard a window smash during the night and could hear two burglars making their way up to my bedroom. I would prefer a gun in my hand than a phone to the Police... the ramifications of these confrontations come down to split-second decisions, a lot can happen during the 20 minutes it takes the Police to arrive to a crime-scene!

We are also talking about CCW not defending your home. Two totally different issues.

A northeast Albuquerque man is robbed in his own home and held at gun and knife-point by teens not old enough to drive a car— little did they know he had a camera on them the whole time.
A burglar stole cash from Chris Stup's home Wednesday - something he vowed would never happen again.
"Yesterday morning we installed this surveillance system, got it all up and running and record video - not even 8 hours before it happened," said Stup.
That evening he was watching TV upstairs.
The security camera was aimed at the front door which was unlocked when the home invasion happened.
"They busted into my house - I was watching a movie and all of the sudden I have a knife on my throat and a gun in my face. I definitely felt that knife on my throat," said Stup.
Police are not allowing the video to be aired.
For Stup, the next few moments were a blur
He caught a glimpse at his captors: two children aged 14 and 16 - one pointing a gun and the other with a knife.
Downstairs there were two other teens; one only 13 years old ransacking the house and stealing a Sony Playstation 3, video games and other electronics.
"I knew that is was all on camera already so I wasn't going to make a scene and get myself shot," said Stup.
That video payed off because police were able to identify and arrest all the teens involved.
Still, Stup says if it ever happens again, he'll be ready.
:I will probably be purchasing a weapon here in the near future, definitely keeping the door lock - the security camera is definitely going to stay," he said.

So all he would have really had to do was lock his door? If I was getting robbed multiple times per week I'd invest in some security doors and windows first, shotgun second.
