So you're a sheep (per my link above). That's all good, most are, nothing to be ashamed of.

The Supreme Court ruled that the police did not have a constitutional duty to protect a person from harm, even a woman who had obtained a court-issued protective order against a violent husband making an arrest mandatory for a violation.

The argument that a gun can be used to protect ones self when help is not available is the main reason to own a gun, but not a sufficient argument to overcome laws in place, especially in locations where help IS (or should be) within less than a minute. You rely on other security at courthouses also. Should we be allowed to carry into courthouses?

I'm not even really opposed to weapons on campus beyond a passive meh not worth the trouble or the added logistics/stress of worrying about immature college kids carrying.

Call the police and tell them that someone is using their cell phone while driving.

Eh, I'm more on the sheepish side. Like the link I provided eludes to, few people are on one extreme or the other. Most sheep are at least mildly cognizant of the bad people in their communities, and most sheepdogs aren't out playing super hero.

I tend to lean more toward the "protect myself and family, not others" mantra. Not real keen on the idea of walking in on a bank robbery and mowing down the robbers. Or actively searching out crimes against other people just so I could intervene and take credit. I'm much more conditioned to get the hell outta dodge. But decided several years ago that I wasn't going to let myself or my family be victimized. If others choose to let themselves be victims, there's not much I'm going to do about that at the moment. Maybe that will change over time, but I'm not willing to put myself or my family at risk trying to save someone else. That said, I'm not sure how I'll live with myself if I were to ever witness someone be killed in front of me that I knew I could have prevented.

In the 4 classes I've taken recently, I've seen many CCW holders who seem to actively seek out situations they could put their new "skill" to use. Or will be quick to tell you how they'd drop anyone that ever came in to their house and plant evidence to make it look legit. Those folks don't share my idea of "self-defense". For them, when they carry a gun every day, every problem begins to look the same. When all you've got is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

Having other methods to protect yourself beyond a concealed handgun should have more weight put on them in CHL/CCW classes. Martial arts, de-escalation, non-lethal (pepper spray), and other ways of protecting yourself should be required at least in the training, if not as part of carrying. Every problem is not a nail. Especially if it's someone elses problem.

Unless I'm missing a second joke, did you miss the joke where sloth was referring to the hero of the Die Hard series?

I was making a word-play joke b/c there last names are so similar. McCain vs. Mclain. And John McCain is a Vietnam vet.

Ah screw it. A picture explains the joke better.

I mean I got that the names were similar, but I didn't laugh (nor was I aware this was actually a known joke). I must be getting old.

The joke may have sucked (a lot of mine do, I'll admit it), but I thought this was a little more obvious. Since John McCain was a POW in Vietnam and all. I guess it wasn't that obvious. :(

I'll have to look up my sources on this again, but the gun control/gun rights debate here seems like it could use some input, so here it is:

Legal gun ownership is inversely correlated to <violent> crime rates:
Population density is directly correlated to <violent> crime rates.

these two effects cancel each other out: so you see substantially decreased crime in areas where the population density is low and gun ownership is high (eg, Indiana, Montana, Idaho), a small increase in an otherwise low crime rate where the population density is low but legal gun ownership is also low (eg, rural areas of Illinois, New York or California), a slight decrease in a high crime rate where the population density is high and legal gun ownership is high (eg, Phoenix AZ) and crime rates substantially higher where population density is high and gun ownership is very low (eg, LA, New York City).
