Hi folks,

I was wondering which books out there would be best to teach PHP to a programmer at intermediate level. Hence, I decided to extend the wondering to you all here.

Which (current)books would you recommend?

If anyone was looking for a complete beginner's book in PHP (but had previous knowledge of (X)HTML and CSS), Head First PHP & MySQL is the way to go. They manage to cram a lot of good information into a single book, and have many activities to help you remember the key points of PHP. (I also think it's comedic, but maybe I'm just laughing at them TRYING to be funny? xD)

For beginners I recommend this book: Learning PHP, MySQL, and Javascript: A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating Dynamic Websites

For intermediate to advanced I recommend this book: PHP and MySQL Web Development (4th Edition)

Both cover more than just PHP, but I feel that's pretty essential to learning PHP anyway. At least, practical PHP.

Both are great because they not only teach you, but they teach you through worked out examples. Anyone could learn a lot through typing up their examples and then trying to modify it a bit to create your own thing.

Having experience in other programming languages I found that Sams Teach Yourself PHP In 24 Hours was a great book to get myself acquainted with the language quickly. I then refer to the web or another book for more specific topics or other things that might not have been covered. For the most part the book gives you a good taste of what PHP has to offer and I recommend it to people who have some programming experience.

I enjoy/enjoyed this book when I first picked it up as well.

PHP and MySQL Web Development by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson is a good book also, a fair number of my study extracts have come from this book.

I've recently been given Luke Welling and Laura Thomson's PHP and MySQL Web Development. So far so good. It may very well be the largest book I will read every page of.

Going through PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practice right now.

I really like it so far.

It starts off pretty easy just easing you into what kind of stuff is doable with OO PHP. It then has a huge 3rd part which goes over Design Patterns with PHP. I'm just starting this part so haven't done much of it yet, but I've glanced ahead and it seems to have a lot of good (and pretty advanced IMO) stuff.

It then has a finishing part on what kind of tools you can use to make your PHP projects a greater success. It talks about PEAR, Pyrus, PHPUnit, PHPDocumenter (called something like this, I may have the name wrong), Version Control, Continuous Integration, etc.

I think it's a great book for taking your PHP to the next level. I know I may have to go through it twice just because there's so much in it I may not be able to get it all at once (at least go through the 3rd part more than once).

I like PHP and MySQL from Visual Blueprint.
If you don't like a lot of arrows and circles you probably wouldn't like it.
It's not for every one.

I learned quite a bit from it though.

I still use it for a reference though.
