My mother in law just bought a Dell and it's been nothing but a piece of shit from the start. On top of that, she paid additional for extra service and that hasn't been worth a pinch of shit either.

I feel really bad, because a few years back I recommended my mother buy a HP, so she bought a pretty high end HP laptop, and it was nothing but trouble from day 1. To this point they've pretty much replaced every single component in the thing at least once, and often at my mother's expense.
So when my mother in law wanted a new laptop, I advised her to get a Dell, because I had always heard that they were decent machines and that Dell's customer service was really good, now that's turned out to be BS as well.

So far in my own experience with laptops I've had 2 cheapo compaqs that continue to perform solidly after several years of service, and an Asus G series that's almost 2 years old and still going strong, zero problems with any of them.

I'm sitting in front of my Dell Studio 1558 laptop right now. It's been one horrendous ordeal right from the beginning; I think I would reach a character limit if I tried to list the problems I've encountered with it so far, so I won't. At one point Dell even sent me a replacement laptop, with higher specs as compensation, unbelievably it exhibited the same myriad of problems and had to be sent back.

In the end they gave me back the original (broken) laptop, along with a full refund to be fair - although I wouldn't go through all of that BS again for the price of this laptop, so yeah...

Do yourself a favour and stay away from Dell!

Just to add one thing of note: the build quality of, ostensibly identical products, and the quality of customer support does seem to vary, depending on the country you are in.

I would say no to Dell too. My first choice would be Asus or Sony. Anyone had problems with Asus or Sony (vaio) before?

I dislike HP so much. My mother's laptop had to get replacement parts 3 times now, and the guy over the phone said, "All of our products have an expected lifecycle of one year". I mean...WTH is that?

I'm sitting in front of my Dell Inspiron 1564 and I love it, and have had no problems it for over 11 months since I bought it.

I would recommend an Acer or Asus computer, Acers(though cheap) really aren't that bad, but Asus computers are much better.

I love my Asus, but most non Mac people would probably consider it pricey. For a cheap workhorse I'd throw compaq out there. I know they're supposedly lower quality HP, but I've had 2 now that have been as reliable as axes after pretty long service lives (one about 5 years, the other about 3).

As per the other thread, I now have another issue with my Dell Inspiron 17R: they're assassin faptops.

I recommend acer as well, my mom has a Dell and it truly is horrific and as for the customer service. please, may as well be somewhat non-existent. Just my 2cents :)

My 1st laptop ('95) was an Acer & it was garbage, my 2nd laptop ('96) lasted me 10 years, & I gave it to a friend that still uses it.

I see a lot of Compaq's come into my shop, but to be fair a good majority of them are virus related issues.

The worst laptops that I see come in are Toshiba's. Some of them have had tape holding down wires, the plastic is thin & brittle, & they are just poor quality machines.

I have had no issues with Dell, & am quite surprised to read about so many members here having issues.

I had a nightmare, last year, with poorly-written drivers on this Asus Motherboard. Although they did refund me promptly after I RMAed it (via the retailer). I've got friends who swear by them though... so I may have just been unlucky! :basecase:

My work laptop is a Dell. It's a powerhouse and I have had zero problems with it. My personal laptop is an HP. Same thing, no problems with it at all. *knock on wood*
