Which OSI Layer DHCP belongs to?

Posted 23 May 2011 - 08:16 AM

Hello DreamInCode. I have funny question. Which OSI layer DHCP belongs to in your mind. There is several different opinions about this according to documents by teachers and even in wikipedia. In my mind it's application layer because it has a server and client, it creates UDP packets, This means it can not be under transport layer, but some sources say it's in layer 3.

Sir, that would be the Application layer...

DHCP or as it is commonly known as; Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Well simply put this is the protocol that delivers to your computer its IP address, DNS servers, gateway IP address, and subnet mask.

This is a perfect example of why the OSI is a model, & therefor is concept, not factual.

Here is the right explanation for you: i hope i will be clear enough......

First of all, It is not common to localize the DHCP/BootP in OSI Model, instead it is better try to explain it in DoD Model. I will explain both and then will give the equality.....

DoD(TCP/IP model) is the model of condensed version of OSI

It doesn't have 7 layer, it has 4 layers.

Here is the graph and the equality

And the following Protocols take place in Process/Application layer in DoD Model which's equality is three different layers at OSI

  • telnet,ftp,tftp,nfs,smtp,pop,imap4,tls,sip(voip),ldp,x window, snmp,ssh,http,https,ntp,nntp,scp,ldap,igmp,lpr,dns,dhcp/bootp

or in other way, here is the localization of some protocols at OSI layer

First of all lets start by saying there are definitely Seven Layers not four there are 4 layers to the DOD4 model Process, Host to Host, Internet and Network layers. But the OSI model has 7 Layers Physical(1), Data Link(2), Network(3), Transport(4), Session(5), Presentation(6), and Application (7). I don't believe that the DHCP is in Layer 7 I know it is layer 3 but am not sure if its layer 4 also

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is a standardized networking protocol used on Internet Protocol .It is a popular method of assigning IP address to a network.DHCP belongs to application layer i.e. layer 7 of OSI model.
