What exactly is Java EE?

Posted 28 May 2011 - 01:24 PM

I am just wondering what the differences are between regular Java and Java EE. Is there something special I need to do to program in EE or can I use the Java I already know?

Java EE is a separate platform that needs to be downloaded and installed from Oracle's website. It is for enterprise-grade applications, and deals with more web-based technologies. Take a look at things like Servlets and JSP as well.

It is a java for server programming, more APIs and libraries which are not available in Java SE for server programming. Have a look at:

Ok thanks guys. So I'm guessing since it uses things like JSP or Servlets that there will probably be advantages/disadvantages from using one or the other? What would a good one be to start with and also what is one that is popular in the industry?

Learn vanilla Java first. EE assumes an understanding of traditional programming knowledge. And both are popular in industry, depending on the project.

What to start you mean between J2SE & J2EE? J2SE is the basic with the basic APIs. When you need to go far then there is J2EE(For server and web based) and J2ME(for mobile development)

Well I know some Java already (just refreshing myself currently). So I was just wondering if there is such a huge difference that I should be trying to get into EE now. But it seems like it is just an "extension" of the normal Java. I do intend on getting my Java back up to speed before I jump on to getting into EE though.
