well, all I have to say is that I'm glad that microsoft has gone back to their roots, stealing good ideas that they otherwise never would have even begun to contemplate. It terms of functionality, it doesn't seem to be as clunky as xp and it actuality works faster on my hardware than xp ever did.

summary: lipstick on a pig.

There's no registry editor, hell technically there's no registry, it is not very backwards compatible (hopefully yet), so as an OS i give it a 7/10, but i won't be using it regularly for a long while i think.

I don't know where you got that information from, but vista has regedit, and as far as I can tell it's no different from in XP.

Admittedly I never use it that much, so there may well be changes I haven't noticed, but it's definitely there.

I've been playing Oblivion and Half-Life 2 on Vista without any real problems, although Oblivion can get a little choppy when lots is happening if I have it on maximum settings. Although this happened in XP too...

If gamers are having trouble with Vista it's because Vista uses a lot more system resources than XP does, so you have somewhat less to spare for your games. So games will run slightly slower on a vista system, especially if your computer is below or close to the recommended specs.

For beastly machines the difference is barely noticeable, and the new additions for gamers are pretty cool. As is the prospect of DX10 gaming :-)

I would wait before getting it. I purchased it because well I could n't wait now I feel that i should have waited. I installed it on a Compaq running 3.4 P4 HT and 300GBHD. It took 3 1/2 hours to install (This after I couln't get to upgrade, I had to do a clean install). After installaion, my printer, videocard, soundcard and keyboard are not compatible or no drivers available. Another problem was I couldn't get connected to my router wireless or wired for some reason the security setting on Vista that it was a pain to get connected. I advise to wait until they have fixed all issues.

a similar thread already exists, plus this is an OS question, and does not belong in the lounge

There are no more specific vista targeted viruses than there are for any other flavour of windows.

Well I first installed Vista Business, but I didn't like it so much. So I reinstalled XP, and waited till I could get my hands on Vista Ultimate. I am running that now, and it is awesome, much better than the first use. I would suggest giving it a try.

I may install it so as to play Halo2 on my laptop...maybe. But then again, it seems like a waste of time and effort in doing it for one game.
