I would prefer a cruise, I can't stand spending too long in a car.

Road trip. Hit all the dying tourist traps, high-five some DICs, and see some national parks. Hands down the way to go. Obligatory: read Jack Kerouac's "On the Road" to get the mood going.

Or Blue Highways - William Least Heat Moon. I love that book

I've been on two cruises, one with parents and my brother, second with my wife for 5-6 days. It was nice, I took two bottles of booze in my luggage since the drinks are kinda expensive. Got to our room and the bottles were opened (luggage not locked) probably checking for bombs. Most of the places are tourist traps and beggars everywhere. We did take a couple of excursions off-boat.
If you are with 'buddies' and not with a gf/wife then road trip will be way more appropriate. Take a hibachi so you can cook food bought at grocery stores rather than restaurants, would be way cheaper. Plus you'll learn to cook which is a good thing while you are single. You may have to endure a few rough times but years later you can look back on those times and laugh.

I've been on one cruise and had a blast. I've been on road trips and equally had a blast. You'll definitely see more on a road trip and your schedule and what you see is your own. However, the road trip depends heavily on how many friends and what kind of vehicle. 5 dudes jammed into a VW Bug for Maine to New Mexico is a recipe for mass murder.

Also, consider that with gas running about 4 bucks per gallon...the road trip won't be near as cheap as you might think. Food, gas, place to crash, place to bathe (cause several dudes jammed into a car during summer days is gonna start to smell like the wrong end of an outhouse) and the fact that you'll be jammed nose to asshole with no place to go for days on end with 3-4 other people will test friendship like nothing else.

only pansies need motels and showers!

I took a 40 day road trip to each corner of the country (FL->CA->WA->ME-FL). It took months to wash the stench out of my Ford Focus hatchback.
