DNS (Internet problems)

Posted 11 June 2011 - 04:59 AM

Hi all

I'm having trouble with my internet connection. I can connect to MSN messenger, but when I open my browsers (IE, FireFox and Chrome) I can't connect to any server, it says there is no internet connection. This just happend suddenly, It's not Malware or anything like that. I was playing a game online (Age of Mythology), and suddenly I couldn't connect.

A person told me that it could be my DNS that is causing it. What would that mean exactly, and how would I fix it?

I am connected through a router.

What do you guys think is causing the trouble?
Thanks in advance

Moved to Computer Support. How are you SURE it's not malware?

Cus I have high security (Which in itself is no total securance), and I haven't been downloading anything. On top of that, I have scannet the computer with different scanners, it's clean.

I also forgot to mention that this problem happens on both my computers. My statiónay (With win 7) And my laptop (MacBook)

Have you tried connecting directly to the modem?

No, I didnt try that. I'll do that when I get home. Maybe it might even help to turn off the router and on again. If I reset it I'll be screwed since I can't remember the settings

Open a command prompt & type the following :

nslookup google.com

See what it resolves, & what ip it is using to resolve the domain names.

Punch one of the ips into a web-browser & see if it takes you to google. If the address is 127.0.0.1 with a port, then it's very likely that malware has installed a local proxy to filter web traffic. MSN most likely opens a socket with an ip & therefor will not rely on DNS.

Why would it be malware if the adress was 127.0.0.1 with a port?

Because the machine should not be dependent of itself to resolve domain names. A malware installed local proxy would be filtering traffic, as I explained in my previous post.

Also try resetting and clearing your browser settings and cache. You might also trying opening a Command prompt and running the command ipconfig /flushdns and try again. At least see if you can communicate with something outside of your network by doing what no2 advised or just pinging a website. If you can than the above should help.

I think it was my router that had messed things up. All I had to do was turn of it's power and on again :)
