Switching to linux (fedora) from windows 7

Posted 14 June 2011 - 09:30 AM

I have fancied a change from a while now in switching to a different OS. Windows 7 has been great for me but i would like to give Linux a chance and fedora caught my eye a couple of years ago when i installed it on a crappy old scrap laptop. The laptop back then struggled to run XP but could run fedora 9 fine.

I would like to give the new distro of fedora a chance. I'm a web developer and i mainly work in notepad++, Use adobe stuff for graphics and still learning a bit of Java on the side.

Now you know a bit about the background, My question. What version of Linux would you recommend? also if there are any users of Wine, how well does adobe programs run in it? As i will still need to use Photoshop etc or do you recommend a alternative e.g. gimp? Do you have any do/don't?

I could dual boot but i don't really have anything on the computer i need to keep after i have backed up my project data, i would rather just start fresh.

Thanks,
Tom

Keep your win7 key handy and an install disk as well. Install either Fedora or Ubuntu (Currently the two best supported / easiest to use distros in my opinion.)

Install a VM on your machine to run Photoshop and other adobe products as a back up, but it's said that WINE can handle Adobe suites Cs3 and under, not sure about others. Check the WINE main site for details on compatibility.
