I think I'm missing the connection between being a script kiddie and having a cracked screen.

My friend's laptop got a virus that keeps turning her laptop off everytime she starts it. I could tell it's in the start-up (msconfig > Startup) already but she's like tell me how to fix it and i'll try it. So in my head I'm weighing out which one is less work, whether explaining this over the phone or doing it myself, and I must admit going for laptop and fixing it is much easier. I even remembered she asked me this

Can you tell me exactly what I have to do to fix it?
The problem there is there isn't a set process on cleaning viruses since they're all very different and affect different aspects of a OS. Of course that didn't register too well.

They punch the screen when the hack infects their computer instead.

Although there is nothing sweeter (or perhaps more depressing) than knowing exactly the steps to fix a problem and fixing an issue without even looking.

Actually, the punch their screens after intentionally frying their hard drives so they don't get caught. While we had tools to look through their computers, it got to the point where my boss didn't care unless they created more work for us b/c the administration didn't care. So we just sent them out to be repaired.

The client I was supposed to get a project with knew I needed to build a portfolio badly, so she told me to build the site for free in order to use her site in such a manner...

She wanted:

  • A user registration system
  • A forum
  • Dynamic content
  • XML-based content
  • and her own Flash video player

Needless to say I:

  • Laughed at her
  • Told her I was right on it
  • and never talked to her again

I don't deal with clients that think I'm so gullible. It's not worth the time or the frustration...

"So the market is crap right now, and we know you want experience to put in your resume, so why don't you work for us for free for a year!"

...

oh wait, we have that, it's called internships.

It was completely ridiculous. I'm going in there when I have four client [I have three @ 1500/mo.] and show her the $6000/mo. income I got without her "help"...

If you're a competent programmer there is no reason to even do an internship for free in the United States.

They do, but they would rather recruit slaves instead.

They can get away with it so they do it, although I thought I heard some rumblings of state legislation restricting such practices a while ago.

I would so back legislation like that.

I mean I'm well past any need for internships. And I never took an internship. But it is a very useful entry point. I would totally understand limited or short pay to the intern, obviously not professional level pay... but free? Please.

Even if I would have went for internships back when it was that time. I just wouldn't have been able to wing that shit. That's someone's time, these kids have to at least EAT.
