Hey everyone, I have a computer that is running Vista and I want to upgrade it to Windows 7. I have never done an upgrade before. Usually, I just wipe it clean and do a full installation. When doing an upgrade to a newer version of Windows, does it remove all your files? I'm going to do a backup before I do this but I was just wondering if all my files and documents would be gone?

There is an option to upgrade your OS around your files, the Microsoft link is here :

an upgrade will give you the option to keep your files from the previous os. Windows 7 should keep them in a folder named "windows.old'.

If u only upgrade to windows 7 & if u want to keep ur all data to be safe, then
while installing it will be ask that in which drive u want winows7,then u hv 2 specify that drive other than windows vista's drive.
If u had vista in C: drive then u can place windows7 in D: drive.
By doing this u are usinng 2 os in ur single HDD.

You can do an upgrade and all your files will be where you left them, but some programs might not work properly. I would overwrite Vista, select the partition with windows on it and select it, the installer will make a file called windows.old which has all your files. This way you can start with a clean slate.
