I just had a pop-up while surfing the site - I can't remember the wording, but it was something along the lines of asking if I would like to help improve the site... "Sure" I thought... I use the site, I'll help make it better... so I clicked it.
I got to about the 3rd page before I started to get annoyed... and by the 6th or 7th I gave up. Its a marketing survey asking about my purchasing habits and annual spend on appliances. What the hell? I'm all for helping improve the site, but I just wasted my time partially (no, I won't bother finishing it) completing a survey about what I do with my money. How does this improve the site?
I've mostly had positive things to say about DIC, but this kind of thing annoys me. Am I in a grumpy minority?
Steve

I've seen it before. I think it is used to figure out what the members spend their money on so we can see what forums will be the most active in the future. For example, if 200 people put down that they bought a new $400 Nikon camera then chances are they may have a question about it later on down the road. Which I believe that would fall in the audio/video category.
So basically it helps the admins get an idea of what might need to be done in the future to help with those forums and subforums. For example, skyhawk133 may add 2 new Experts to help with that forum.
That's just my opinion of what it's used for. Hopefully a Moderator or Admin can answer this as well.

It's probably more for MediaGroup1 LLC, which is the company that owns </dream.in.code> and the company that Chris (skyhawk133) owns. Since MediaGroup1 LLC focuses on marketing, I'm sure that the quiz is for that.
And yes, I've gotten it before and I do whenever I access DIC from another IP address (like at school or work). I filled it out once.

Well that makes sense... although its still annoying - and its had the unfortunate side-effect for him that I will no longer participate in any surveys for this site. I detest being duped.
[edit] I've PM'd him and told him as much [/edit]

The issue is that there's some slight-of-hand trickery involved.
Much like kiwi_steve, my original impression was that this survey was for collecting community feedback on how the site can be improved. And if that's the intention, then I'm more than willing to contribute.
But after getting a few pages in, it's become more than obvious that it's marketing demographics survey in disguise.
Very uncool!!

it's not for improving the site, it's so Chris can present better sates for advertisers so that he can charge them more. in a round about way that improves the site becuase more funding == site improvement.
