I use Code::Blocks and it suites me just fine. It's easy to use and free, so that's the one I downloaded.

While Visual Studio is a good C++ IDE it is not open source and as far as being object oriented and type safe who cares?

It is a proprietary piece of software that is pretty much limited to the Windows Operating system.

Even though I rarely use C++ myself,
I prefer Visual studio.

That's why I said pretty much. What kind of usage do you think the Mac version actually has?

It's on any mac laptop in our office and I see it frequently on said laptops in the .NET meet ups.

So, even if every Mac developer was using Visual Studio, the dominating use of that compiler would still be on Windows machines developing for the Windows Operating systems.

A naive question, but wouldn't a lot of these Mac'ers have a virtual Windows environment to run VS and other Windows software? I suppose there must be some statistics somewhere ;)

Good question. I don't really operate with mac-anythings so maybe? I figure, for the most part, enough apps have been cross platformed they may not need a VM.. but maybe they do. Meh.

Possibly, but then they are basically Windows developers developing Windows software, not Mac developers using Visual Stdio to develop Mac software.

Also how many of those Macs are actually developing C/C++ software rather than any of the .NET languages.

I am wildly speculating that a lot of Mac'ers aren't fans of Windows, but need the environment for their work. Even with the increased availability of cross-platform apps - particularly highlighting VS - they will continue to work Window-like in a virtual environment.

But I digress... ;) and am going off piste.

For programming in C++ I use Kdevelop. It's super good, and having used visual studio in college, it's like a visual studio for linux. Except you can use it in windows as well.

I tried codeblocks, but it didn't work well for me. I tried code lite, interface issues.

Netbeans is great, but lets be honest; it is for Java programming.
