maybe in terms of laptops, not true in terms of pcs. i just had an argument with someone about this where i spat off the current stats, amd wins due to price per performance

AMD has the best, Intel can keep the cheap. I think intel is slight less expensive because its market is so big, but the difference in the $/Performance ratio isnt that big.

wow, did you not just listen to me. find another post that we had this debate in, i had a shit load of stats and information showing why AMD has the fastest/best performing processors per unit price (and that has the same proportion as power utilization). however if you want to squeeze out every ounce of performance out of your system, capty is right, intel currently is leading in the market. i figure this will last 6-8 more weeks.

Digg is lame.
Also, why does everyone judge their favorite processors by who has the fastest or top processor in the market, when the're looking to buy an entry level to mid range processor?! How does the leader effect standing performance that has already come and pass?
I mean, all the time I see people "Oh well I'm going to buy a ______ becuase they have the ___(product name)___ and it's the best right now."
I really don't like it when people do that, when your looking at a new processor or video card you should compare the two in your price range or spec range and their performance, not base a decision off who's on top this week.

It is hard to shop like this. I can only use my situation as an example, but Im looking for my first PC.
Since I have been a Mac user for some years and also having never wanted to build my own till now, I haven't bothered keeping up with tech news on PC's thus I dont know the first thing when it comes to processors, or graphics cards and I dont know if I can get away with buying a slightly slower processor or graphics card and possibly saving myself abit of cash. All the info I can find is telling me about the newest and best thats out there and not whats been and gone. (If this makes no sense im sorry Im quite tired and it seem to make sense in my head)

processors really shouldn't be your main concern anyway, get something that sounds nice with some decent cache. the ONLY reason i'm up to date on it is because i both major processor companies in stocks so i keep selling and buying everytime new technology comes out. it isn't worth the hassle, the good thing is the market does a pretty decent job that if you find a pretty repetitive price for a processor >2ghz dual core, you have all the power you need for conventional usage (programming, general graphic design (i'm not talking fluid dyanmics), gaming and other bullshit) . it's not the most price effective way to shop but all in all it will save you and everyone else a lot of time and worry which outweighs the money you'll save. unless you're too feminine to understand my logic, but that's up to you

whenever i build a computer i aim for the top.
not maybe the brand new month old stuff.
but definitely top of the line.
right below the price breaks for bleeding edge stuff.
that way ill have some lifetime on the computer.

i agree, in terms of what's most cost efficient for the best shit out there, i always get the 3rd or 2nd depending on the deals i can get, of the top of the line. why because the top of the line, standard marketing tells them to double up on top of their normal profit margins (except in holiday season or whatever other nerd seasons there are, then they triple to triple and a half up) where their other products are linearly priced
