Rails - How to speed test your webhosting

Posted 10 July 2011 - 12:46 PM

I'm thinking about switching my web hosting to something else, but I want to keep the server costs low for now since it's got like 20 hits per week traffic at the moment and it's hard to get a picture of how much traffic we have once we're out of beta.

That said, I would like to quantify my webhost's performance before I start shopping around for alternatives.

I read this blog post on performance testing, but I'm having trouble implementing it on my webhost because when I do $ rails_mongrel stop it tells me:
[error]
[email protected] [~/APPNAME]# mongrel_rails stop
!!! PID file log/mongrel.pid does not exist. Not running?
mongrel::stop reported an error. Use mongrel_rails mongrel::stop -h to get help.
[/error]

Also, I'm not entirely sure whether they're using mongrel in the first place, since it's shared webhosting and I only assume it's mongrel since /usr/bin/mongrel_rails exists.
