I have successfully booted 4 OS's on my laptop (Vista, XP, OSX 10.6.3 (not a distro), and Ubuntu). It wasn't for practical use, just for experimental purposes since I rarely use my laptop.
On a machine with enough RAM to run each individual OS smoothly (about 3gigs I'm presuming), would there be a dramatic difference in performance if I multi-boot in comparison to say... buying 4 separate hard drives?
Does multi-booting take a physical toll?

As long as you are cleanly rebooting and not powering off, the performance should be fine on a black/blue drive (going by WD color conventions), make sure the drive is at least 7200RPM.
If you have the money to drop on 4 hard drives, I would go that way, I like my storage room for each os

Thanks, I guess I'll just share the HDD.
The idea of 4 hard drives is tempting though, would that require more power (possibly a new power supply)?
EDIT: Well I know it'll require more power, just would it be a large difference?

If you have a 350W, I'd consider going to 400 or 450W. It will suck quite a bit more power.

Alright thanks I'll save the cash and multi-boot. Besides, the boot loader is more visually appealing than the default boot menu
